You are invited to a one-day mini conference to celebrate World IA Day (WAID) on Saturday the 9th of February 2013.
Theme:
In some of the languages and regions we practice in, the words for “architecture” and “design” are quite different; in others: it’s the same word. Wouldn’t it be marvelous to understand if, when and how the discourses of architecture and design diverge and overlap?
In 2013, the Information Architecture Institute seeks to facilitate a global conversation about “the architecture part” of IA and to focus the 2nd annual World IA Day on generating ideas and artifacts that allow greater understanding of what we mean when we say “architecture” and when we say “design” in our research and practice.
Line-up:
• Welcome: The coordinators of the WIAD Johannesburg event will open the day and provide a brief introduction to the theme and new comers to the field of IA
• Morning speakers: The days events will start with four presentations:
• Mike Lewis (Origin Interactive) on wayfinding and placemaking in digital spaces
• Bronwyn Kotzen (Urban Works) on her thesis work merging data-driven approaches to urban planning and architecture
• Terence Fenn and Jason Hobbs (Human Experience Design) on the inner city and information architecture approaches to the Johannesburg Art Gallery project
• Denver Hendricks (University of Johannesburg) on the wayfinding redesign project for the five campuses of the University of Johannesburg
• Afternoon workshop: In collaboration with the University of Johannesburg, Rob Enslin (ThoughtWorks) will be hosting a workshop that invites participants to engage with the campus wayfinding project.
• The day’s events will culminate in drinks in an evening of socializing and networking at Il Giardino, 44 Stanley.
This event is brought to you by the Information Architecture Institute, the University of Johannesburg and the SA UX Forum.
Ticket price: R100 (concessions will be made for students)
Who should attend?
Designers of all kinds, strategists, marketeers, product folks, customer experience officers, programmers and developers, content strategists, architects, urban planners and any one, really, who cares about making the world a more useful, usable and desirable place to live in.
What is information architecture design?
Information Architecture (IA) has been described as the “The structural design of shared information environments” and provides methods, tools and techniques critical to providing the underlying structure of user experiences. Often described as ‘the design behind the design’ IA has made its biggest impact in the design of user experiences for the Web, however more recently it is increasingly being acknowledged as a critical tool for designing usable, effective and integrated cross-channel customer experiences.
