This is the Southern African Rare Bird News Report issued at 18h00 on Thursday, 12 August 2021.

Information has been gleaned from various websites, email groups as well as from individual observers who have passed on their sightings. This report cannot be taken as being totally comprehensive as it is based only on information made available at the time of writing. All bird sightings reported here are reported in good faith based on information as provided by the observers. Any inaccuracies are totally unintentional and the writer cannot be held liable for these.

None of the records included in this report have undergone any adjudication process with any of the subregion’s Rarities Committees, so inclusion in this report does not constitute any official confirmation of the particular record. Observers are still encouraged to make the necessary submissions accordingly.

For those who may have only joined the group recently and are interested in finding out what has been seen in the past, previous reports can be viewed at http://groups.google.co.za/group/sa-rarebirdnews

Another quietish few days have passed, but still a few interesting birds to report on…

Starting in the Western Cape, an AFRICAN JACANA was found at Rondevlei Nature Reserve on Tuesday and was visible from the second observation tower feeding out on the hyacinth. Further east, 4 KNOB-BILLED DUCKS were still present near Vleesbaai at -34.254, 21.876 yesterday, the AFRICAN GRASS OWL was still present around the channel linking Langvlei and Rondevlei, near Wilderness, on Monday evening and at least 2 LONG-TAILED PARADISE WHYDAHS were also still at Roam Private Game Reserve yesterday.

Up in the Northern Cape, the juvenile EGYPTIAN VULTURE was picked up again on the webcam at the waterhole at Nossob in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park on Monday at around lunch time, but no further sightings as far as I am aware since then.

Kwazulu Natal held on to the BLACK-NECKED GREBE at Thurlow Game Reserve until at least Tuesday.

Across in Mpumalanga, the 2 SICKLE-WINGED CHATS were still south-east of Bethal at -26.533, 29.608 this morning while the two AFRICAN SKIMMERS were still around about 150m upstream of the Olifants River bridge in the Kruger National Park on a sandbank in the river this afternoon as well.

Up in Namibia, locals were quite excited to report that the very out of range BLACK-HEADED ORIOLE was seen in a garden again in Kramersdorf in Swakopmund yesterday while a single LESSER SAND PLOVER was found at Luderitz Lagoon on Saturday.

And finally, in Zimbabwe, a RUFOUS-BELLIED HERON was seen in the Biri Dam area at -17.471, 30.179 yesterday, still a very unusual species to get this close to Harare.

Thank you to all observers who have contributed their records. Please continue to send through any reports of odd birds as well as continued updates on the presence of rarities already previously reported, no matter how mundane you think they may be. Even if you think someone else has probably sent in a report, rather send the report yourself as well. The only way to improve this service and to make it as useful as possible to everyone is if it can be as comprehensive as possible.

Kind regards

Trevor
