This is the Southern African Rare Bird News Report issued at 21h05 on Thursday, 10 May 2012. Information has been gleaned from various websites, email groups as well as from individual observers who have passed on their sightings. This report cannot be taken as being totally comprehensive as it is based only on information made available at the time of writing. All bird sightings reported here are reported in good faith based on information as provided by the observers. Any inaccuracies are totally unintentional and the writer cannot be held liable for these. Before I get started, I have another commitment on Monday evening so, unfortunately, there will not be any formal report going out then, but obviously I will post any important news if I should hear of any…
It’s been a really quiet last few days with not much to report on. Perhaps the most interesting record comes from the Eastern Cape where a DWARF BITTERN was reported from Sleepy Hollow just outside Port Elizabeth over the weekend. According to locals, there are only 3 known previous records from the province, all of them very historical, so if this bird remains, it may well attract some provincial listers.
Moving into Kwazulu Natal, a single BARAU’S PETREL was seen in the vicinity of a tuna longliner about 50km east of Durban for 2 successive days at the beginning of the week. And finally, a slightly delayed report (partly my fault because I initially overlooked it) from 30 April where a female PENNANT-WINGED NIGHTJAR was located at the mouth of the St Lucia estuary. This seems to be a rather good record for the province and I apologize for not putting the word out sooner to give provincial listers the opportunity to chase it! |
