This is the Southern African Rare Bird News Report issued at 18h00 on Thursday, 24 June 2021.

Information has been gleaned from various websites, email groups as well as from individual observers who have passed on their sightings. This report cannot be taken as being totally comprehensive as it is based only on information made available at the time of writing. All bird sightings reported here are reported in good faith based on information as provided by the observers. Any inaccuracies are totally unintentional and the writer cannot be held liable for these.

None of the records included in this report have undergone any adjudication process with any of the subregion’s Rarities Committees, so inclusion in this report does not constitute any official confirmation of the particular record. Observers are still encouraged to make the necessary submissions accordingly.

For those who may have only joined the group recently and are interested in finding out what has been seen in the past, previous reports can be viewed at http://groups.google.co.za/group/sa-rarebirdnews

The week has continued to be all about Mpumalanga and the mega LESSER WHITETHROAT which was still showing well to the gathered admirers around the Amazing Kruger View Restaurant parking area in Henk van Rooyen Park today. Now in at least its 7th day of temporary residence in the area, it has already drawn a considerable number of twitchers from all over the country to see it, many of which had the sudden need for emergency out of town meetings this week and, should it stay put through to the weekend, will no doubt prove extremely popular then too. Who knows when there will ever be another chance to catch up with this very lost little bird in the subregion again…?!

Down into the Western Cape where there have been some interesting records coming through over the last few days. Over on the Garden Route, a juvenile ALLEN’S GALLINULE was found in Wilderness yesterday near the Touws River mouth in Waterside Road at -33.992, 22.581 (and was still present there until late this afternoon) and a GREY-BACKED SPARROWLARK was found near Indalu Private Game Reserve, west of Mossel Bay, yesterday while there was also some major surprize when 2 LONG-TAILED PARADISE WHYDAHS were found at Roam Private Game Reserve, between Prince Albert and Beaufort West, yesterday afternoon. It didn’t just stop there though and, this morning, the numbers had increased to at least 6 individuals there, a pretty mega species to get in the province!

In the Eastern Cape, the popular LESSER NODDY was still entertaining twitchers at Cape Recife late yesterday afternoon while a single HOUSE CROW was also reported from Cape Recife on Tuesday.

Moving up the coast into Kwazulu Natal, no fewer than 5 HOODED VULTURES were seen on Manyoni Private Game Reserve this morning, a LESSER MOORHEN was reported again at a private farm dam in Port Edward at -31.056, 30.184 yesterday and a HARTLAUB’S GULL was present at the St Lucia estuary yesterday as well.

And finally, in Mozambique, the popular MALAGASY POND HERON was still present at Dunes de Dovela this morning.

Thank you to all observers who have contributed their records. Please continue to send through any reports of odd birds as well as continued updates on the presence of rarities already previously reported, no matter how mundane you think they may be. Even if you think someone else has probably sent in a report, rather send the report yourself as well. The only way to improve this service and to make it as useful as possible to everyone is if it can be as comprehensive as possible.

Kind regards

Trevor
