Hello all,

I'm just back from an inspiring weekend in Washington, DC for the Women's March. If the March was any indication, the future is indeed female!

I have been chatting with Marlise and some of her partners in the Bafazi initiative and wanted to share some of the other campaigns that I have been speaking to lately. These are all US-based. Would love to hear of any others with an international perspective.

All the best,

Adriana

A) Initiative from BENT that might be of interest: https://www.facebook.com/bentultimate
- they are trying to balance out the stories of male players more often told with interviews with key women that helped develop the sport
- I've copied part of an email from the organizer, Brittany Kaplan, below. She had some good tips on women in team sports from an US perspective:

I've started broadening my scope out to learning about the history of women in team sports, and how sports can be used for social change (even the UN has emphasized this). The UN has written about how women in sports are essential to helping the UN achieve their millennium development goals. (See page 4). It's all fascinating stuff! Did you know there are plans to build a women's history museum in DC? I just came across this yesterday. They already have online exhibits, one of which is about women in sports. It's eye-opening for me to see how much is already being done surrounding issues of gender equity in sports and the value of women in sports. And it's so easy to connect to these groups on social media.

28 Days of Food Frisbee and Feminism-A new initiative from 99 Days

Welcome to 28 Days of Food Frisbee and Feminism!

What:
28 Days of Food Frisbee and Feminism is an offshoot of the recent 99 Days of Ultimate Women initiative. We are asking people to get together and talk about the issues that face many of us on and off the field. Rather than hosting a large and expensive national conference, we have chosen to decentralize these conversations so everyone can attend.

When:
Any day in February of 2017

Who:
Anyone who is interested in the many connections between feminism and ultimate: athletes, coaches, tournament and league organizers, administrators, parents, teachers etc. We suggest you reach out to different members of your community, across teams and programs.

Where:
Any place on the planet. These conversations could be as simple as two friends sharing coffee or as complex as a large meeting of ultimate players in your area. A walk in the woods to a mini-conference. Choose whatever will work best for you and your community.

Why:
We want to continue the many discussions that were started on our 99 Days Facebook page. We believe that face-to-face conversations are crucial to understanding and initiating change. In addition, we hope that these conversations will encourage people to speak up at any ultimate gathering, from a captains' meeting to a league draft night to USAU's strategic town halls which will be coming up this year.

How:
First of all, join our Facebook group, follow our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/28DoFFF) and invite your friends to join us. Then pick a date and a location and announce it here as soon as possible by creating a Facebook event.
Once you have decided on your logistics, Zara and Chip will make available some suggestions to help you in planning: host and facilitator instructions, a questionnaire, bibliographies and other resources. You may use as much or as little of these materials. We understand that every conversation will be unique but we want to be of service to you if needed.

Final Steps:
1. Host a Conversation
2. Take a Photo
3. Post an Action-Item
4. Contribute to the Video Debrief

Dear SA Ultimate,

The South African women's ultimate community is excited to announce the launch of the Bafazi Development Fund. We invite the SA ultimate community to apply for funding, support this initiative and spread the word!

What is the Bafazi Development Fund?

The Bafazi Development Fund (BDF) has been established by members of Bafazi Bafazi to support the development of women's ultimate in South Africa.

Its aims are to:

  • Increase the diversity (socio-economic, racial and geographic) of female ultimate players;
  • Increase participation of female ultimate players;
  • Develop female athletes, coaches and leaders.

The fund was established with seed money from Bafazi Bafazi's fundraising efforts, and has grown with contributions of individual ultimate players. To date, R16 201 has been raised. The BDF hopes to distribute approximately R5 000 per year.

What will the Bafazi Development Fund support?

The BDF will support:

  • Coaching and skills development of female ultimate players;
  • Tournament participation, and access to other opportunities;
  • Other women’s development opportunities, as identified and approved by the BDF steering committee.

Priority will be given to:

  • Women of colour
  • Women from a disadvantaged socio-economic background
  • Women from outside of ultimate “hubs”
  • Women who are actively involved in the ultimate community and have shown sustained commitment.

How will the BDF be managed?

The BDF will be managed by a steering committee that includes at least 1 woman who has played for Bafazi Bafazi, the RSA national women's team.

Inaugural committee members include Angelique Kellerman (KZN), Anna Coussens (WC), Asanda Jonga (EC), Katie Huston (WC), Taryn Morris (WC) and Thulie Mayaba (WC).

The committee still seeks to recruit members from other provinces, especially Gauteng. Please contact bafaz...@gmail.com if you are interested in serving or would like to nominate someone.

Funds will be administered via the SAFDA bank account, but fundraising and all decisions about how the funds are spent will rest with the BDF committee.

How can I apply?

For now, the BDF will accept applications on a rolling basis, i.e. anytime. This may change in the future. An application form is available here

We may also issue targeted calls at specific times, with application windows. The BDF also seeks to proactively organise women's ultimate clinics.

How can I support the fund?

To sustain the fund over time, the BDF will undertake periodic fundraising activities, such as tournaments. We encourage SA ultimate players to support this work by, e.g., donating tournament profits to the BDF.

We also welcome contributions from members of the SA and global ultimate communities, local businesses and others who are keen to support women's development.

To make a contribution to the Bafazi Development Fund or share a fundraising idea, you can email bafaz...@gmail.com

You can also make a donation to SAFDA with payment reference "BDF-YourName-YourSurname".
