I am trying to use a Polar USB IR sensor so I can use my S710 with
Sportstracker on my Dell laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 but I am new to
Ubuntu so please bear with me :)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. cd /s710-0.21
2. ./configure

Last part of terminal output

checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
appending configuration tag "F77" to libtool
checking for libpng-config... no
checking for png_create_write_struct in -lpng... no
configure: error: libpng is required

I have libpng 12-0 installed and I can't remove it and reinstall it
because it is used by many other applications. As far as I can work
out its fine.
Any ideas anyone?

Hello,
You will need the dev version: libpng12-dev
If you get it working, tell me wath is your sensor, because I can't get mine
working.
See you

Hi Steve,

This program is super old and seems to be completely unsupported. The sad
reality is that there is basically no Linux support for downloading files from
Polar devices. I played around with a few of them and none of them really
work. The cloest I could find for my CS600 was the "rs400" program. It would
download a binary file from the CS600 OK, but it was missing most of the code
to translate the binary into a .hrm. I spent countless hours trying to mod
code to make it work and never really got there.

I had to setup a Windows VM with VMware just to run the stupid Polar software
to download my device. I ran that CS600 for about two years. The best thing
I ever did was to dump it and move to a powertap. I know they are expensive,
but they are supported on Linux and the xero headache is worth the cash.

As for the config error, there are basically only two things it could be:
either you don't have the right package installed or s710 isn't looking in the
right place for it.

1. Do you have the -devel package installed? Most distors split things up
into seperate packages these days.

2. Is S710 looking in the right place? I haven't built this in many many years
but most ./configure scripts allow you to specify some paths. I'd explicately
provide the path to my libpng stuff and try it again.

3. You could try downloading some super old version of libpng, build it from
souce and stuff it in /usr/local/oldlibpng or something like that, then add
that to the libpath when bulding s710. That way you don't hose your package
deps but you get the old libpng s710 needs.

Good luck,

Tom

Thanks Asier and Tom, I will have a try at specifying the location of
libpng and post the result.
Polar are missing a trick if they only provide for Windoze and I will
buy something else when I can afford it- I am only borrowing a S710 in
any case. I had their chain tension based power meter which was a
joke. I was involved in a now extinct power devices development and I
had the data being stored in suberb XML format with great conversion
into mySql on a pc. The data transformation is very important as with
XML you can design for future additional data and storing it
eventually in a relational db gives a lot of analysis potential. That
was really why I was messing with the S710- To see how SportsTracker
worked with a view to offering to help develop it.
Thanks again for everyones prompt support & I will report back.
Steve

You should also have a look at Goldencheetah, the top of the line OSS cycling analysis software.  runs on Linux, Mac & Windows and is under active development.  It won't help you get the data off of ytour computer, but once you do, it is way better then SportsTracker.
