Hey everybody,

So some of you probably already know that there was a small explosion
of indie games about hacking (the media definition) in the early 2000s with
games like Uplink, Dark Signs (never released) and the Hacker Evolution series.
These games were pretty unrealistic, but fun. They had good gameplay and
immersive story lines.

I'm thinking about doing a game like them, but with real operating systems, and
real tools. I was thinking you'd have 2 computers and 2 routers. One to simulate
the Internet and one to simulate an internal network. The computers would be
running multiple virtual machines.

Players would gather together in the same room and take on different roles of the
hack. You'd have one guy doing the information gathering and scanning, another
guy would be bruteforcing passwords, another would be looking for and exploiting
vulnerable services, etc.

Most missions would be stealing data, but sometimes you'd get into the system
and there would be a mini-game waiting for you that is in context with the mission.
Maybe it's to take down a nation's powergrid, or launch missiles or something.

Story-wise, the guy who's setting up the game would be the Admin, kinda like a
Dungeon Master in D&D. He'd play the role of the client for the players, and
conversations with the client would happen on IRC. Every week or every month
there would be a new adventure waiting for the players.

Like I said in another thread, I took off studying security to study game design
for 2 years. Now that I'm back in security mode, it seems like it could work out
well.

Anybody think this is a cool idea, or am I way off?

I think it's a very good idea but you're going to need a lot of scenarios for players to play with.

Yeah, that's the hard part. I suppose as I learn more about security the more scenarios
I'll come up with.

Thanks for the reply.

That is a fantastic idea… I would love to be a part of this. There is an interesting website called Telehack http://telehack.com/ which is really cool…
