Hey everyone,

Does anybody have ideas they'd like to see for the group? Also, what is everyone's
skill level.

While I wouldn't call myself a neophyte, I wouldn't call myself an expert in security,
or even close to it. I took a long break from security, but now I'm back studying and
testing.

I'm a computer science major. I've been developing software for 15-20 years, mostly as a kid. I don't know much about network security, but I do know a lot about C, operating systems, and some about the linux networking stack. Been a part of the open source community for some time now.

Cool, I've just started programming seriously. I was working on a game in C# that never went anywhere, but I learned a lot. Other than that I've done some stuff with the Arduino and PHP.

Still have yet to properly learn C, though. I'd like to learn how buffer overflows work.

Hello everyone,

I know how some things work and get concepts pretty well but I'm not a
programmer at all, I've taken a few classes and can doodle a bit with
C/ C++/ Python. I'm really interested in learning networking and
security. I only know so much about how packet switching networks
work, the rest is just grasping basic concepts.

Cool. Glad to have you on board.

For the first meeting I'll be doing a demonstration of a basic penetration
test. After that, if we have time we'll go through a pentest together on a
vulnerable system.

Sounds great, I've never done a truly successful pentest.  The closest I've ever gotten was poking around on my high school network years ago.  This is Sunday the 10th, right?
vulnerable system.

Here's one idea I had (don't laugh). I used to be heavily involved in game development.
One of my projects was a hacking simulation, like Uplink by Introversion. I didn't get very
far in it, due to limitations with the game engine I was using. But I got to thinking about
doing a game with real software and virtual servers.

Basically the players would take on jobs from people wanting your services to carry out
attacks on various targets. They'd pay you money to buy things (I don't know what yet), and
you'd advance in your hacking career.

Anybody actually like the sound of this?
