Each year there is a match racing series sailed between MPYC, SCYC, EYC,  and Stillwater.   The deed for the cup, much like the America's Cup involved in nuance and intrigue :-)

There are a few ways we can support the club in this effort.

1)  Help with a possible sail off between SCYC, EYC, and Stillwater currently scheduled for Aug 2.

2)  If SCYC is the challenger we could also help the club with the scheduling of several practice sessions where we get the challenging SCYC team ready by using Santana's in a series of practice match races during August.  Fred and I lent our boats to the Animal Sydney 38 team a few years ago for such type of training week night evenings.  Other training activities are possible.    Here is a video of MPYC getting ready last year.   https://youtu.be/zKGE1YRF2EA?si=ZBnNpR_prLchxGP6

3) The Veeder Cup is currently scheduled for Sept 6-7 in Monterey.  Its not clear at this point if the cup will be sailed in Santana 22s.

Hopefully more on all this soon, but if you are interested in sharing your boat or if you know of another boat other than Tara that could help with any of these plans let me know.

Chris

A bit more learned tonight in a Veeder Cup Sail off Orgainizing Meeting.

EYC and Stillwater have agreed to a sail-off in Santa Cruz on Aug 2 using Santana 22s using fleet race format with the first boat to win 3 races to be the challenger to the cup.

SCYC will provide Race Committee, and make 3 Santanas available.  Stillwater also still exploring the idea of bringing one of their boats so only 2 may be needed.

EYC also requests a practice day before the races on Aug 2, so we need to work with them to make Tara or other boat available in the next few weeks.   Invite for the upcoming team race on July 12?

Still undecided about who might represent SCYC in the sail off.  Kris North likely to organize a meeting to make that decision soon.

As I mentioned at the RC meeting, I am happy to make Hot Tuna available though I have no expectation of skippering (be happy to crew if needed). I also know that Laird is interested in representing in Kitten, his match and team skills appear pretty solid to this youngster (Chris is a better judge of that than I am though).  Homer is of the opinion that Hot Tuna is pretty fast. I am planning on getting new sails for Hot Tuna regardless, but I don’t know if we have enough time for hodges to complete them by then. Kitten and Tara are also quite fast, we could reach out to Bob (if he doesn’t see this) and see if Rick’s Place could be available as well. Pete said Skipjack is available as well. Thoughts?

Summary-

To my knowledge, Hot Tuna, Tara, and Azor, Kitten, and Skipjack are available for the sail off  (other options can be explored as well.) It might be worthwhile to do some boat hopping before during and after the team racing to vet both boats and skippers.

That a good list to make available.

Also note that Stillwater will bring their own sails, and it sounds like now they will barrow a boat.

They also have a fleet of 3+ club boats and have a good waiver that makes places liability on the borrowing team which will be good to look at in advance.

Would be good to review their waiver and see if we should pursue any changes in our coverage as well?

Hi all-

I'm pretty new to the concept of the Veeder Cup, but happy to do what I can to help the club win it!

On boats: I can make Kitten available as one of the three boats, used by either me or someone else (I think my insurance covers other non-commercial use, but I'd be happy to be educated more on this). For the sail-off, would there be a plan to swap boats every race? If not, it seems like the other clubs would just complain that they were given a slow boat (after we soundly beat them, of course).

On who represents SCYC: it sounds like we're talking about a 2-step process here, first the sail-off then the actual Cup. It's my understanding that MPYC hasn't chosen the class for the cup yet, and it could be something other than a Santana 22. I don't know how it was done in the past, but I think SCYC should put the best team forward for each phase separately. The best Santana 22 team should compete in the sail-off, then if the final is in say Santa Cruz 27's, the best Santa Cruz 27 team (who is also competent at match racing) should compete in the final. At any rate, I am happy to participate in the sail off on August 2 if I am asked to do so.

Just let me know how I can help.

Laird
