New Brothers,
I speak for all of Scale and Coin when I say we are very excited to welcome you into our Brotherhood. As I mentioned during Initiation, you have great things in store for you, and we look forward to seeing what you accomplish as new Brothers. Below are some important administrative items related to your new membership.
1) Dues. You have until Friday, March 8 at 5pm EST to pay your $50 Initiation dues along with any fines you accrued for failing to collect the necessary signatures ($10 for each missing non-Exec signature, $15 for each missing Exec signature) or blasting the Pledge listserv inappropriately. If you fail to pay your dues by Friday, your current balance will double and is payable by Friday, March 22 at 5pm EST.
2) Big-Little. The official Spring 2013 Big-Little pairings along with the updated Scale and Coin lineage chart are attached. The Big-Little program is designed to facilitate personal and professional mentorship between junior Brothers and senior Brothers with similar interests. Please find a time to meet with your Big/Little as soon as possible.
3) Roster. The updated Spring 2013 membership roster is attached for your reference purposes. As with all Scale and Coin documents, please do not distribute this outside Scale and Coin.
4) Dropbox. The Scale and Coin Dropbox is one of the most valuable physical (digital) resources we own. Access to the Dropbox is contingent upon active, good-standing member status, current payment of all dues/fine balances, and agreement to the terms of the Dropbox. Read the terms and sign up for access
here.
5) Listserv. You have, if you are receiving this email, been added to the Scale and Coin listserv (
scale-a...@googlegroups.com). You are more than welcome to email the listserv with relevant professional opportunities or to organize
ad hoc (non-alcoholic) social events. However, the same rules apply to this listserv as the Pledge listserv. Namely, do not send anything irrelevant to the Scale and Coin listserv, and do not "Reply All" when addressing a single person.
6) Elections. Elections will be held on 4/4. New brothers are not eligible to run for Executive Board positions but may apply to new Vice Presidents for committee chair positions. These committee chair positions are intended to allow new Brothers to explore leadership roles in a low-stakes environment and with mentorship from their Vice President. I strongly encourage all new Brothers to consider apply for a committee chair position. For more information on the roles of the various Executive Board members, please see the attached S&C Constitution and Bylaws.
For old Brothers: you may now sign up to run for Fall 2013 (and in some cases, Spring 2014) Exec Board positions here. Remember, President, EVP, VP Finance, and VP Admin are year-long positions. VP Professional, Social, Membership, Alumni, and Fundraising are semester-long positions. In order to run for Exec Board, you must be in good standing (active or abroad, with a current dues balance, and not on probation). You must submit your application
here no later than Monday, April 1 at 5pm EST.
7) GBMs. Scale and Coin holds one-hour weekly General Body Meetings (GBMs) that focus on a (different) specific area of professional development each week. Meetings are mandatory and are generally held in SocSci 136 at 8:30pm. If you have a legitimate excuse for missing GBM (or any other mandatory event), you must notify Tony Chau (
tc...@duke.edu) at least 24 hours in advance of GBM.
8) "Any other mandatory event." Generally, mandatory events are Rush events, Pledge Rituals (Induction, Midcourt, Initiation), and GBMs. Attendance at social events is optional and never mandatory. Each semester (excluding this semester), you will pay a $30 refundable fine deposit. Each unexcused absence from a mandatory event will cause $5 to be debited from your fine deposit. The remainder of your fine deposit will be refunded to you at the end of each semester. Three unexcused absences will cause you to be placed on probation and four unexcused absences may be grounds for suspension and/or dismissal. For the official details of the fine policy, please refer to the attached Bylaws.
9) Myrtle Beach. Every year, Scale and Coin travels to Myrtle Beach, SC for "Beach Week," rents a beach house, and creates great memories. This year, that trip will take place on May 5-10. While the exact details are still being developed, the (all-inclusive: transportation, lodging, meals at the house, and refreshments) trip will cost at least $100 for Brothers and is open to guests at a 50% premium (if Brothers' cost is $100, guest cost is $150). Please fill out
this interest form immediately if you haven't already or your plans have changed since you last filled it out.
10) Facebook. You have been added to the Scale and Coin
Facebook group. Please feel free to use this as a social medium.
Again, congratulations on your new Brotherhood. If you have any questions on the items above, feel free to reach out to me at
david.m...@duke.edu,
(808) 382-5186, or Craven C209. If I don't see you before Friday - have a great Spring Break.
Best Regards,
--
