The brake light should not be on. The DRL feature uses only the front turn-signal bulbs. Nothing in back. Might be worth a couple of feet of range.

I'm sorry to say, whatever source stated it was in the dash fuse
block of a '97 was pulling all of your legs.
To disable '97 DRL's, you must remove a plug-in diode block that is
buried behind the IP cluster ductwork.
And to gain access to it, you must rotate the dash forward after
dropping the steering column and column harness assembly.
Have you noticed the pin on each side at the bottom of the dash
frame, behind the kick panel cover? That's the pivot point.
I believe the above procedure is also detailed in the 1997 S-10
Electric service manual set, volume 1.
A real sicko at GM was behind one. Yes, in the '98 it's a five second
procedure to pull the diode from the fuse box.
Not a task worthy of the watts saved. Better results if you remove
the rear box and lay flatbed planks ;)
