An Idea concerning the Power steering module on the S10-EV; it would be
less expensive to convert it to manual steering by changing the steering gear
box; less required electrical energy from the system; I did this to a 1984 S-15
Jimmy and do not regret the change-over at all.It MAY be about the same for
the '97 S10-EV.Doing so will build-up your Biceps a little , too.
Thanx.

Subject: Re: [S10-EV] 1997 - NiMh
conversion for sale on Ebay (partialbattery pack)
Hello Jay
You might start out only wanting to make 3 mile trips. Then your going to
find you enjoy driving electric so much you will soon want go farther. Myself
I can make do with about 20 to 25 miles of range. Its nice to have around 50
miles of range but rarely used.
NiMH modules are 150 dollars plus shipping. I have not bought a PS module
lately but as I recall they are around 750 dollars and were available from GM.
Driving the truck without the power steering working would get old very fast.
Also a safety issue as you really are not able to control the vehicle.
Lead acid batteries are not very durable also they are very costly per
mile. Going three miles in an ICE though is one of the worst ways to
use an ICE. So if your only choice was ICE or a lead
EV then lead acid would be acceptable. If you have the ability to
keep the NiMH that would be the best way to go. If you have a Tech2 you would
be able to extend your NiMH life by not fully charging it or running it in a
low state of charge.

Hello
all,
I just subscribed to this list yesterday because I found the
S-10 EV
that Michael is selling on E-bay. (He mentioned the list, so I
assume
he's also a subscriber.) I live in Atlanta (85mi south of
Eljay) and am
looking for a EV to make short (3mi round trips) commutes
to a nearby
MARTA station.
I've talked with Michael on the phone
and he says that the truck is
basically working if I can get enough extra
NIMH battery packs. It comes
with 18 batteries (but all have at least one
bad cell), so would need
10-12 extra batteries assuming you could swap
cells around to fix 14-16
of the 18.
It is also missing the power
steering pump control module, so I'd either
need to find out to swap in,
or wire up a switch or pushbutton. (or turn
really
hard!)
Questions for the list:
-Is finding 10-15 replacement NiMH
batteries possible / cost effective?
(I've heard prices of
around $150 for a used battery?)
-How rare is the power steering pump
control module?
-Would it be better to just buy lead acid batteries and
convert it back
to PbA? (as my range needs are quite
low...)
Thanks,
Jay
