Coronavirus Cinema Day 33 - One of the joys of accessing a thousand channel universe is that eventually you're going to bump into something special. This happened to me a few years ago when I suddenly found myself watching the opening titles of Paramount's "North Dallas 40," another movie that somehow slipped by me in 1979 when it hit theaters. Although I recognized a young Nick Nolte, what struck me out of the box was John Scott's subtle, jazzy opening score. The movie turned out to be a gem. Nolte plays North Dallas Bulls (think Cowboys, of course) wide receiver, Phil Elliott, a wise-cracking, pot-smoking, survivor of the NFL's brutal Sunday warfare, who has a special buddy relationship with quarterback Seth Maxwell (Mac Davis - who has never been better). Arrayed against Elliott's rebellious nature is quite an array of villains, starting with the numbers-assessed coach, played by G.D. Spradlin who only needs to walk into the room and you know he's after Elliott's ass; Charles Durning as a no-nonsense assistant coach, Bo Svenson as a huge lineman who just doesn't like Elliott, and the wonderful Dabney Coleman as owner Steve Forrest's younger brother, whose fiancee ends up in Elliott's bed. Also, keep an eye out for ex-football great John Matuszak, who steals scenes as Svenson's lineman buddy, O.W. and has a dynamite confrontation with Durning in a locker room. Based on Peter Gent's terrific novel, this may be the best sports movie I've ever seen, as it portrays professional football in a most realistic light where players are treated like so much equipment, and kept in games with an array of hard drugs that numb their pain, but not their ability. You see, Elliott has the best hands in the league, but they may not be good enough on this team. Prepare yourself for some surprises, and that really cool Scott music score.
