I just received a new Apple TV 64G as a gift. I want to use my new Apple TV and my iPhone 5s while in my RV to stream Netflix (without any WIFI). However, I am one of those individuals who is still grandfathered into unlimited data through ATT, and therefore using my phone as a hotspot is disabled by ATT (so using my phone as a hotspot is not an option). I have been searching the Internet, and have not seen anything promising... Before I actually open the Apple TV package (keeping my option of returning the gift), I am trying to determine if there is any confirmed solution to the "streaming with no wifi/no hotspot" problem? This was my reason wanting the Apple TV.

I am hoping for a resolution that will allow me to use just the Apple TV and my iPhome 5s, however, I have seen suggestions about using a router to simulate a WIFI that is connected to nothing.... Is this a workable solution? Thank you.

I travel in my camper and have unlimited data also and I use my iPhone/iPad to stream and just connect with a dongle direct to the TV - about a 20 foot cable I can sit almost anywhere in the camper and control the screen. Unfortunately the ATV has been designed and marketed as a streaming device I don't think we'll see the ATV work without a network connection...

The Apple TV 4 is very much built around the internet, it needs an internet connection every time it is turned on (although it may in cases be subsequently turned off). It would be extremely difficult to use it in your situation, if indeed you were able to use it at all. I wouldn't take the idea any further if I were you.

I have the ATT grandfathered plan as well and the 64GB ATV4, an Airport Express and an iPhone6S and was going to try and make your idea work to see if it would. It sounded great until I thought about it more. I believe the flaw is the idea that you could set up a network, connect the iPhone, ATV4 and AirPlay Netflix to the ATV. Once you direct the iPhone to connect to the WiFi, it looses its cellular data connection and does not bridge one network to the other.

I do not think it is a technical problem for Apple, it's more of an emotional one. If they did, they would have some angry carriers and cable companies. The carrier would not get the hotspot fee and many cable carriers would loose the business. The customers would love it!

I think Protodd has the cheapest solution and in a trailer or rv the cable should fill your requirements to watch Netflix on the big screen. I bet it will be alot more reliable and easier to maintain and the best part is you use unlimited data and it does not cost you a penny more.

I'll have to look into the dongle/hdmi cable option... I honestly was not aware that this was an option... So, you are saying that with the dongle, I can see on the TV exactly what is on my phone screen? Apparently I have been WAY over-thinking this.

Though some of their stories struck me as intense and overwhelming (like receiving feedback in the middle of leading a large meeting) after reading the book, I've found myself more open to more feedback... even criticism!

This has been backed by research- in trials where a team had to work with a difficult person or underperformer (an actor placed in the study) the team took on the negative characteristics of that difficult or underperforming teammate. These teams performed 30-40% worse than teams without the actor. Netflix particularly disagrees with the concept of performance improvement plans (PIP). With the Netflix culture of candor, employees should have access to regular, helpful feedback.

They cited a Duke University and MIT study where a group of employees offered a medium bonus performed no better than the employees offered a low bonus. Employees offered the largest bonus actually performed worse than the groups with the low or medium bonus.

This is in spite of a study they shared from Vienna University- when a newspaper was placed next to a sign stating the price, and a plea for honesty, with payment slot, two-thirds took a newspaper without paying.

I am currently on a trip and I want to activate the Netflix offer to enjoy my trip at night and I have searched and found that Virgin TV should be used so I want to activate this offer without needing it and I have mentioned the reason that I am on a trip and I am completely away from home

If you're not a Virgin Media Customer, then you would need to sign up using Netflix's standard process on their website.

Cheers,

Hopefully those of you out there can help find a solution to this. I have two Roku stick, one of which functions without issue (Streaming Stick 4k), but unfortunately I'm having problems with the Roku Express.

My Roku Express connects to Netflix without issue, however, it will connect to any other streaming service reliably. I ended up performing a reset of the router and the Roku Express stick, after which it connected to Prime once but since its last use it is now failing to connect. Prime reports error code 0.28 and other services simply fail to initialise/connect.

I've attempted a factory reset of the Roku Express but this hasn't made any noticeable difference. I have various other devices connected to the router including the other Roku stick, PC, mobile phone etc.

We appreciate your report about this playback issue you're experiencing, and we'd like to know more about it. Could you tell us if you've been able to use this before without seeing these issues happening? How far is this device from your router? We would also suggest connecting your device to an alternative network, like a mobile hotspot, to see if that makes a difference.

The Roku box is in the room adjacent to the router. I tested the alternate wifi connection point available and this made no difference and I also tested using the suggested mobile phone hotspot but again, no difference.

If it's of any relevance, when the Roku box starts up it doesn't have the same advertisements/banners I see on the other box within the house prior to obtaining a connection to the network. I've also noticed that the only time the banners populate are on the three occasions I've successfully connected to services other than Netflix.

I have managed to perform firmware updates to both the Roku Express box and my router, however, this issue still persists. The only way I have found as a work around is to perform a Network Connection Reset whenever I wish to use one of the affected services.

@RokuEuniceL - I ensure to keep my devices up to date, however, as per your instruction I checked for updates and I am running the latest version. I have also swapped over my device so that it is powered via a wall socket (first time I've heard of this advice for your devices) and it has made no difference.

I only ask because we were getting Discovery+ from Vodaphone without subscribing to anything else other than a mobile phone. I was simply wondering if I could save 5 by having Netflix billed via BT rather than with Netflix directly.

Netflix just won't work with the new Orbi. We're getting an error message stating that it looks like we're using an unblocker or VPN...we're not. The guy at Netflix told my wife that, in effect, Netflix doesn't work with Orbi because of the way devices switch between one unit and the other to get the best signal, or something like that. I switched back to our older Netgear router and everything's perfect.

We had the Orbi hard wired into an Arris cable modem from our ISP. All the devices (Sony smart TV, 2 PC laptops, Chromebook, 3iPhones on wifi. Great signal and functionality with everything but Netflix. Took the Orbi off and put our Netgear Nighthawk (R7000) back in and Netflix was immeditely great.

Could also be that the switch to Orbi prompted a DHCP address change from the ISP, and the one the OP got just so happened to previously be assigned to someone who was known to run a relay like Tor. If that's the case, it'll expire on its own...eventually.

I think they're going to have to come up with a better excuse than this. If Orbi had this problem, then all the other distributed/mesh systems out there should also be "incompatable" with Netflix. This is not the case, though. Whether or not you are jumping from satellite to satellite would be completely transparent to Netflix.

As a test, I just started a Netflix stream on my laptop and then started moving around the house. I verifiably saw my laptop jump from one Orbi satellite to another, and Netflix never missed a beat. So, gotta call b.s. on their claim that "Netflix doesn't work with Orbi".

Occasionally on my TV's built in app netflix hiccups - I think this is more a netflix issue. Try signing out of the app and back in. No problems on iPads, chromecasts, and netflix all sorts of different places and locations. Perhaps try a different wifi channel if you're in a congested wifi neighborhood. Try channel 1 or 11.

Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Enjoy.

The basic plan is not displayed as an option for U.S. subscribers on its Plan and Pricing page for U.S. customers. The company quit offering the basic plan for new subscribers in July 2023, but allowed basic plan customers to remain on the subscription so long as they didn't cancel or change plans.
