Nutzer können unter anderem Equalizer, Kompressor und Halleffekte nutzen, die für einen besseren Klang sorgen. Schärfe-, Licht- und Farb-Filter verbessern die Wiedergabe von Filmen und durch die Playliste lassen sich mehrere Video-Dateien hintereinander abspielen. Untertitel werden in vielen Formaten unterstützt, die sich in Position und Darstellung flexibel einstellen lassen. Sind Untertitel und Ton während eines Videos mal nicht mehr synchron, ermöglicht der VLC media player eine Korrektur.
Zudem kann man Videos stufenlos drehen, was gegen das Vertical-Video-Syndrom hilft, bei dem ein im Hochkant-Modus aufgenommenes Video falsch herumgedreht abgespielt wird. Seit Version 2.2.0 erkennt der VLC media player dieses Problem und nimmt die Drehung automatisch vor. Außer dem Drehen von Videos stehen im Menü noch weitere Werkzeuge wie Vergrößern, Verkleinern, Spiegeln oder Verzerren zur Verfügung. Die Wiedergabe von gezippten Medien-Dateien ist mit dem VLC media player direkt möglich, sodass der ZIP-Ordner vorher nicht entpackt werden muss.
Eine praktische Funktion des VLC media players ist zudem das Konvertieren von Medien-Dateien in andere Formate. Ergänzend bietet der Player von VideoLan.org eine Aufnahmefunktion, mit der sich unter anderem Livestreams aus dem Internet oder Videos von CDs und DVDs aufnehmen lassen. Urheberrechtlich geschützte Videos können allerdings die Aufnahme des VLC media players blockieren. Weitere Funktionen lassen sich über Erweiterungen ergänzen. Seit Version 3.0 bietet der VLC media player unter anderem Hardwareunterstützung für die Wiedergabe von 8K-Videos. Durch die Integration von Hardware-Dekodern wird die CPU selbst bei solchen Anforderungen nur gering belastet. Auch 360-Grad-Videos, 3D- und HD-Audiowiedergaben, 10-Bit-Farbtiefe sowie HEVC-kodierte 4K-Videos mit 60 fps und High Dynamic Range (HDR) werden seitdem unterstützt. Zudem können Videos auf Chromecast-Geräte gestreamt werden, selbst wenn ein entsprechendes Format nicht nativ unterstützt wird. Somit lassen sich Videos auf DVD per Stream an den heimischen Fernseher übertragen. Ferner spielt VLC Blu-ray-Java-Menüs (BD-J) ab und gibt Videos im Heimnetzwerk über SMB, FTP oder NFS wieder.
Der kostenlos erhältliche VLC Player lässt sich unter Windows, macOS, Linux und BSD-Systemen installieren. Dabei unterstützt die Version für den Mac allerdings kein MIDI. Nutzer von Windows, die den VLC-Media-Player nicht installieren wollen, können zudem auf die portable Version VLC media player portable zurückgreifen und diese ohne Installation vom USB-Stick aus starten. The breakout star for Team USA at the past two Women's World Championships, Heise was made the No. 1 overall pick in the inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League Draft on Sept. 18 in Toronto. She was selected by the yet-to-be-nicknamed Minnesota team, which, according to multiple media reports this week, will play its home games at the home of the Minnesota Wild, the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The PWHL's inaugural season is set to begin in January, with six teams, all playing 24-game schedules. According to the PWHL Players Association Collective Bargaining Agreement, players will make at least $35,000 per season, with each team signing at least six players to three-year deals of no less than $80,000 per season.
Heise is likely to fall into that max-contract category, as the No. 1 overall pick. She was named Minnesota's Miss Hockey Award winner in 2018, after a 74-goal, 104-point senior season at Red Wing. She then became one of the best players in University of Minnesota history and is the 2022 Post Bulletin Sports Person of the Year. Heise is one of just three players in Gophers history to win the Patty Kazmaier Award, given annually to the top player in women's college hockey, and she is a two-time First Team All-American.
Prior last week's Draft, all six teams signed three players in a brief free agency period. Minnesota, whose GM is former Gophers great and Gophers assistant coach Natalie Darwitz, signed three U.S. Olympians, two with Minnesota ties: Defender Lee Stecklein (University of Minnesota alum and former Minnesota Whitecaps star); Kelly Pannek (two-time national champion with the Gophers and two-time Olympic medalist); and Kendall Coyne Schofield (three-time Olympic medalist and nine-time Women's World Championships medalist).
During the event, the teams were divided into three brackets. The bronze bracket consisted of novice players, the silver bracket included intermediate players, and the gold bracket featured experienced players. Toronto selected veteran Canadian defender Jocelyne Larocque second, and Boston took Swiss center Alina Muller third. Muller was the only non-North American player picked in the first three rounds. Muller gets to stay in Boston after spending her college career at Northeastern.
