Cornellnotes are notes that are optimized for reviewing. On a normal sheet of class or reading notes, the notes take up 100% of the writing on the page. On a Cornell notes sheet, two-thirds of the page are for note-taking, and one-third are used to write down questions about those notes. For each line of notes, you write a question in the left-hand question column. When you study, you can cover up the column of notes and quiz yourself!
Cornell notes are usually structured into three sections. In the left-hand third of each page is a column for questions. The two-thirds of the page on the right side are for taking notes during class and readings. And at the end of the notes is a section for summarizing and review. Some people have these review sections on the bottom of every page, but I like to save the review section for the end of all my notes.
This post comes with a free Cornell note-taking worksheet set, which includes a front page for your Cornell notes, a middle page or page without a header, and a page for conclusions. If your notes are longer than 3 pages, you can print out the middle page as often as you like! You can get the password by subscribing to my mailing list!
Wow Tamara, I am so glad that this post helped you and that it has applications for your family! Thank you for taking the time to comment and please let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of help!
2/14: Went over the questions from yesterday. Read chaps 2-3 and do FIVE Cornell notes TOTAL for both chapters (due on Friday). Chapters 4-5 Cornell notes (FIVE TOTAL for both chapters) are going to be due on the MONDAY we come back from break. Feel free to start working on it now! Bring your IR book tomorrow. You do not have to use the template, but you may. You can also write it out on your own paper.
2/12: Presented posters on WWII topics. Also, for HW, read the articles on "Meet Elie Wiesel" and the "Introduction to the Memoir." You need to write 10 annotations (numbered, please!) TOTAL for both articles combined. Also, please bring your IR book to class tomorrow so I can get titles.
1/18: So sorry to be missing the last day of the semester! I have a horrible cold, complete with fever, cough and runny everything. Drinking gallons of fluid has done nothing so far, and I'm honestly quite miserable! Rosie is loving it because I am rarely out of bed but I am going crazy!! But, class continues...
Down to business... the portal will close on Monday, but I will be finishing your grades next week. The Monday we come back after Regents week, I will have a print out of your grades so we can verify everything is correct before I post the grades after school on that Monday. Of course, if you would like to stop in next week and get your grade, you are welcome to do that in between exams (keep in mind I am also proctoring and not always in the room - might want to check that first). If you have failed the quarter, I will personally contact you before the end of next week. Also, please try and finish the TKAM essay in class today if you have not already done so. It is going to be a major grade for the 3rd quarter, so if you don't finish, you can finish when we get back after next week, but by then you may have forgotten what you were doing. If you have not finished the TKAM test, you can ask the sub for it and finish it today (they are clipped together on my desk), or you can finish on Monday. Also, please keep an eye out for any reminds I may send next week in case I need something from you.
11/28: Finished reading Chapter 15 in class and watched the mob scene in the movie. HW - read the attached article and answer the questions on the last page. EXTRA CREDIT - read chap 16 to pg 219 for a chance at extra credit tomorrow.
MAKE-UP WORK: Your grades are updated. Please check so we can reconcile any errors. HW and Quiz grades will stay ZEROES, but you can get half credit for the major grades IF YOU DO SO IN MY ROOM NEXT WEEK. Do NOT do the work at home - it will not be accepted. You are welcome any period (even if I have a class or free period), but 7th I'm in the library so you'd have to go there. See/email me with questions.
11/1: Today you received the handout titled "Scout's Perspective." It is due on WEDNESDAY. Remember that the audio is on my Google Classroom. IR #4 is due MONDAY. Also, we are starting the Food Drive on MONDAY. The class that wins gets a Tim Horton's party supplied by me! The Frontier Food to Families specifically asked for corn, cranberry sauce, carrots, gravy, brownie mix or cake mix, and stuffing for Thanksgiving. If you want to bring in other food, that would still be appreciated. No expired food! You get a homework pass for every FIVE things you bring in (up to 4 passes) that you can use for the rest of the year.
10/23: Collected Chap 1&2 questions. Mini lesson on Unfamiliar vocab. As you read chap 3, write down any unfamiliar vocabulary words (and their definitions). There will be an upcoming vocab quiz! For the quiz, you can use your notes and the book. Write down as many words as you want! Quiz will be on Thursday.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Please check your grades. If there is an error, please let me know so I can fix it. (If I missed an email you sent containing an assignment, I want to make sure you get credit!) Also, if you have a blank for Summer Reading because you did it with a different teacher, please let me know who the teacher is so I can ask him/her for the grade. If you need to complete the Summer Reading, see me ASAP. If you have a ZERO for something you did not do, I am offering a ONE TIME (Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday!) gift of letting you turn in the missing assignment(s) for no more than HALF credit (could be less, depending on the quality). If you are going to take advantage of this offer, you must complete the work by next Wednesday at 2:30. BUT - you must complete it in this room during a free period (yours or mine) or before/after school. You must come to the room with the printed out or blank paper (print from the webpage), and you will show me that it is blank BEFORE you start working. You are welcome to come down and work even if I have a class. My schedule is on the website. If you were absent, please look to the website FIRST - and remember it is YOUR responsibility to turn things in. But if you are unsure of something or if you need help, I am available during my free periods, or before or after school. I am happy to help - you only need ask!
10/16: Organized notebooks. Filled out Reading Record for the things we've read so far (see me for a copy). Also, we finished presenting and dsicussing the topics from yesterday. Complete the Agree/Disagree for tomorrow.
10/10: Colected your central idea essay and organizer. Also, we read some articles and took some notes on topics pertaining to the time period before the Civil Rights period. We completed TWO articles today, and we will (hopefully) complete the articles tomorrow. HW - finish lit chart for "The Lottery."
10/9: We completed the Lit Chart for "Harrison Bergeron," and discussed any issues for the central idea essay due TOMORROW. Typed, please, and in the room with you when the class starts. Blank lit chart below to be completed for "The Lottery" for THURSDAY.
10/5: Hi all! I'm still sick - bad cold. Doctor said to stay home tomorrow, for my benefit and yours - no need to spread the germs around! Your IR is still due tomorrow. Make sure it gets in the tray by the end of the day (help each other out with that and help the sub when he/she is collecting the papers, please!). Only email it to me if THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE. Remember we have a library that has computers AND printers! I'm having someone pick up the work in the trays at the end of the day and drop it off to me on Friday. Make sure you bring in your IR book - the sub will check them in, then you can either read or work on your essay. You can email me tomorrow if you need help or have questions. Your central idea essays will be due on WEDNESDAY, so if you have questions, get them ready for Tuesday (or email me tomorrow). Keep reading your IR and get ready for the next IR response, and work on your essay over the weekend. Enjoy the extra day off on Monday! See you on Tuesday! :)
10/2: Finished out Central 'lightbulb' Organizer from yesterday. Also, you received Mini Lesson # 6 on Transitional Words/Phrases. For HW, please write a 100-200 word paragraph in which you use at least FIVE transitional phrases seamlessly in the story. However, the top three totals will earn candy!
9/26: Reviewed HW from yesterday and handed it in. Also, we numbered the paragraphs in "The Lottery," and we completed the middle of the attached chart. Each class created a list of central ideas than can be found in the story "The Lottery." In the first column, you need to find two paragraphs that show that central idea, and in the third column, you need to either explain it or put the example from the paragraph. Bring your IR book tomorrow! There are NO CHANGES after tomorrow. If you forget your book, you will use one of mine for the WHOLE project. IR #1 is due 10/5. Be reading!
9/24: Completed the Agree/disagree handout. Make sure you read the directions on the handout! Also, we read the short story "The Lottery" and do TEN annotations. Finish reading it for HW (along with finishing the Agree/Disagree handout) for HW. KEEP READING YOUR IR BOOK! Conferences will begin on THURSDAY. Questions are posted here if you want a preview. You can come to the conference with TWO picked out - I will pick the third question myself.
9/20: Quick review of lit terms. QUIZ on lit terms. We will reivew your 1st QT IR project on this day. May want to check out the school library catalog to check out what we have here in the building, because we will only be in the library for about ten minutes. I also passed out the 1st QT IR project. It is attached below. See me if you have questions!
9/18: Finished working on in class Summer Reading assessment. You need to have an IR book for this Friday. You can bring one from home, borrow one of mine, or get one from the library. We'll be going to the library for the first 10 minutes of class on Friday. No HW due tomorrow.
