Thought I'd throw this out there, since I've just finished dealing with
this for my RootsWeb site.

If you've got a web site hosted at RootsWeb, remember that it will soon
become read-only (i.e., no longer able to be updated). The announcement
by Ancestry back in February didn't provided a specific date, other than
"early 2024," but also says that if you want to continue maintaining
your site, it'll have to be moved somewhere else "before 2024."

I'm deleting my site off Rootsweb and putting it elsewhere.  It's such a
shame that Ancestry is closing them down.

I am happy to leave mine there. The people on it come up in web searches.
Managing some late minute updates using VPN and CuteFtp.
FileZilla seems to fail.
and saying no updates so use my tree on Ancestry for latest.

I agree that it's too bad Ancestry is doing this. I would have been willing to pay a reasonable monthly or yearly fee to keep it where it is; don't know why Ancestry didn't at least try that before making this decision.

I'll be moving my site before 2024.

Ron – if you move your site to another host, you'd be surprised how quickly it is found and indexed.  You could always copy your site to another host, then wait til web searches have indexed it before deleting the old one.

Good morning all. Does anyone have a recommendation on a site that is a reasonable cost. We are a very small group, almost entirely funded by our own aging group. Also with limited computer knowledge.

I went with Family History Hosting (www.familyhistoryhosting.com). They
have a variety of plans, and the owner, John Cardinal, is very helpful
getting things set up.

I opted for an Archive plan ("Archive I"), partly because I don't think
I'll need the extras that come with the "Standard" hosting plans, and
partly for longevity. For Archive I, I pay an annual fee (currently
$60), plus an initial setup fee of $540. Then, once I stop making yearly
payments (probably when I'm no longer around), the site will stay online
for 10 more years before disappearing.

Mine is staying in Rootsweb. I have not updated it in years. But the info is still available and still FREE. Finances do not allow me to move it all to a paid location. I developed a Facebook page several years ago and continue to add information there weekly. Again its free and has a search engine and over 1200 followers.

I am planning on leaving my site up but was hoping to do some updates first.  Thanks for the reminder! I have not been able to connect/update with FileZilla.

    I will try CuteFtp.

Status:    Connecting to freepages.rootsweb.com...
Response:    fzSftp started, protocol_version=11
Command:    open "sper...@freepages.rootsweb.com" 22
Error:    Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity
Error:    Could not connect to server
Or maybe I am doing this wrong.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks Beth.
I want my data around for cousins to find and a paid site would not help that.
How will will the provider keep sites that are not being paid for?

So I will have the Rootsweb for however long they keep them and I hope they mean that
Plus a Blog I started and my tree on Ancestry and other sites
The Roorsweb was found by many cousins and I am sure they will keep finding

I have managed to update with both Coreftp and FileZilla and a VPN picking a country in Europe well one that works

To all,
I just tried uploading our rootsweb site changes and FileZilla won't connect to the server. Is everyone having this problem?
I am not familiar with those other uploaders.

Any help would be appreciated.

Geoff;

I've tried connecting using FileZilla, and got the following responses:-

Status:    Connecting to sitesuser.rootsweb.com...
Response:    fzSftp started, protocol_version=11
Command:    open "bris...@sitesuser.rootsweb.com" 22

Error:    Could not connect to server

Then tried with a VPN using Phoenix AZ, then a Newark NJ site, with the same response.

Looks like the server in question is on "vacation".

I've never had a problem connecting with WinSCP to my two sites but tonight I received the message "Network error: Software caused connection abort".

But I was able to connect to a Wordpress site I have.   So clearly connecting to a rootsweb.com site at CDT 11:32 is not possible.

I don't have any special knowledge, but I can't imagine that they
wouldn't work. Of course, if you have links to an external web site
(i.e., not part of your own web site), and the address of that web site
changes, that link will no longer work.

The RW server hasn't been accessible for a number of days.  The reason for this is not known, but it's obviously not an Ancestry priority.

From suggestion by Barry Carlson
I have been using a VPN
For me Proton VPN which has a free version

I would suggest Reboot if Filezilla etc already used and failed
SO start VPN and Connect - I found Japan and others may fail whereas somewhere in Europe may work and some USA
Then run Filezilla or CoreFTP and perhaps. I am fairly uptodate

I have added a Note from me re No updates from 2024
I am glad the sites will remain there
I do not see the point of deleting. So many cousins found my web and I link pages to my tree

Yes I got a new password from Rootsweb but I would not expect replies to queries. I assumed current 2024 plan is to save costs.

best of lunk with updates

Well it looks like Ancestry.com has pulled the strings early on our
rootsweb websites. They said the first of the year but this is October.

I have been testing a free hosting website at
https://www.infinityfree.com with several of my websites. My Setzer
family website is at https://wlsetzer.wuaze.com/fam_setzer/.
Infinityfree has no ads and supports https. Again this is free hosting
and like all free hosting websites could go away at any time without
notice. Always keep a backup copy of your website on your local PC.

Thanks Wayne, good to know. Here's the page where they state we have until early 2024 to do something;

https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Retiring-and-Migrating-Portions-of-RootsWeb

Some of you don't seem to mind that you won't be able to connect to your site after Dec 31, 2023. Do you realize that after that date, your entire site, including exhibits, will be owned by Ancestry/Rootsweb? If you really don't care about that, that is your choice, but if you want to retain ownership, you need to be able to connect so you can delete it. If you do not have a copy of your whole site on your own computer, then make sure you download it before you delete it.

If it matters to you, then you'll want to report your inability to connect ASAP. I filed a report on Oct 16, got an acknowledgment email with a case#, and heard back from them yesterday. They claim nothing has changed on their end. I replied to that, stating that others have had the same problem. Haven't heard back yet.

If all of you file a report, it will be harder for them to claim nothing has changed on their end.

FWIW, below is the email I got yesterday; none of the suggestions worked for me (*), but maybe something here will work for some of you. *I didn't try VPN as I don't have VPN installed, but I shouldn't need it as I live in the U.S.
**************************************
Thank you for contacting RootsWeb, we regret any difficulty you may be experiencing and are happy to help.

The website is still working as designed and there has been no changes made since then. Normally, if your computer cannot connect to that server or denies access and times out, then either your FTP software is not working correctly, your using Wi-Fi on a public network which presumably does not allow FTP or something on your computer (probably a firewall, public key or other security software), is blocking all FTP connections.

You may follow the troubleshooting steps below on how you may fix the problem.

1. Verify FTP access
2. Temporarily disable software firewalls.
3. Verify that a router is not preventing the connection.
4. Configure hardware firewall or proxy settings.
5. Verify your FTP information.
6. Log in with another FTP client.
7. Verify whether your SFTP server is supported.
8. Modify connection options.
9. Troubleshoot FTP log.

How to allow an FTP server:

1. Open the Start menu, do a search for Windows Firewall, and press Enter.
2. Click the Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall link.
3. Click the Changes settings button.
4. Select FTP Server and make sure to allow it on a Private and Public network.
5. Click OK.

In addition, RootsWeb has been a US only property website, therefore, servers outside the US has been blocked so, we suggest that you may use a US VPN server only and please connect to the RootsWeb servers using FileZilla immediately. If the same error occurs, you may contact Filezilla support for further assistance.

We hope this helps and we apologize for any inconvenience the situation may have caused.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Beth,

Thanks for posting this.

I / we know the websites are working - thankful for that because even though I 'have' a copy of the website, I found a file yesterday, referenced that I didn't have, so was able to go to the live website and grab it.

I contacted them last night - although I only had a choice of Mailing List or World Connect, so I picked mailing list and then told them the issue is FTP access.  I even tried putting shftp in front of the account name, which didn't help.

However, I'm game to try the various things mentioned.

Sorry about that. I forgot to mention that the drop-down list doesn’t include Hosted websites. I chose World Connect as it seemed closest.

I personally attempted to create a a message in the Rootsweb support page a few minutes ago, and before I could complete the page it threw a 'Technical Fault' and also told me I wasn't authorized to contact them.  It appears that Ancestry are getting a bit 'touchy' with regard to certain Domain Name Servers referring content to them.

It appears that Ancestry are getting a bit 'touchy' with regard to certain Domain Name Servers referring content to them.

You could get test that possibility by copying the URL I provided and paste it into a new browser window – I think you’ll find they are simply shutting down the ability to report problems.

Try going here to report the issue directly to Ancestry. You have to deal with a chatbot first, but maybe you’ll be able to get to a human being;

https://support.ancestry.com/s/

Lastly, if you have a twitter account, try @Ancestry – that is a public place and may get a response.

Is there anyone that has access to the site that would be willing to remove mine for me. I'm in Canada so do not have a VPN let alone a US VPN. I connected last week, was trying to trim down our site, but as that's no longer possible I think it best to just remove.

this for my RootsWeb site.

I've posted the following on the RW support page under Mailing Lists.

I tried contacting Ancestry and finished up doing a Chat with a Grace who appears to have been working in the Philippines. Couldn't deal with a RW problem - not trained. Gave the RW support page link, which I have now successfully used via mailing list category, and have since been emailed a case number.

Here is what I posted:-

Subject:
RootsWeb Hosted Freepages websites
Description:
For over a week, owners of RootsWeb Hosted Freepages websites have been unable to connect to the server using an FTP client.

I recently observed that the server may have been subject to Denial of Service attacks, and restrictions had been placed on accepting referrers from selected Domain Name Servers outside of the USA. I personally overcame that by using a VPN site in Phoenix AZ, but that routing has now stopped working.  A number of Freepages site owners living in the USA have also reported on https://groups.google.com/g/rw-website-help - of being unable to access the server.

My feeling is that FTP access to the server has been stopped, or restricted to some unknown port. Would you please confirm that such a measure is temporary and that access will be restored shortly.

I contacted Rootsweb, too, and had to choose WorldConnect as a choice.  Freepages wasn't listed.  I received the same email you received from support.  The email response came from rwsu...@ancestry.com if that helps anyone.  My husband, who knows IT, did all the steps they suggested.  Nothing worked.  He pinged sitesuser server....got no response back. The problem is on their end though they won't accept responsibility.  If we don't get answers, we will probably have to go through sup...@ancestry.com or 1-800-262-3787 and bug them until someone acts.  I don't know what else we can do.  Very frustrating when they get a lot of money from me for Ancestry.  I recognize Freepages was free, but they do have some responsibility to allow us to download our pages.  Makes me wonder whether I should download my DNA and my tree yet again to be safe.  Who knows?

Last night I looked up how to fix SFTP errors.  The first item was to verify the IP address.  The address my CoreFTP (recommended by Rootsweb some years ago), was 52.86.148.35 and that is the IP address for sitesuser.rootsweb.com

Putting in sitesuser.rootsweb.com
I  did a lookup of the address - siteuser.rootsweb.com -  which yielded 172.64.149.224 - putting that in place of sitesuser.rootsweb.com - didn't make any difference.

However, this morning I found another IP address that I haven't yet tested - 104.18.38.32 this info from putting in siteuser.rootsweb.com here - nslookup.io/domains - which has some other information that will likely mean something more to IT professionals.

What was interesting in the info at the bottom of the page was that sitesuser.rootsweb.com host is Amazon.com whereas siteuser.rootsweb.com is Cloudfare.  So I'm wondering if this is a host issue as well?

I'll contact support after lunch today (EST) giving time for the RW folks to wake up.  The above may be more info for others seeking relief.

I submitted a report yesterday and got a case number. A little while ago I got a response from rwsu...@ancestry.com asking me to send a screen capture of the FTP errors I'm seeing (ssh_init: Host does not exist
and Could not connect to server) so that they can "further investigate." I sent it, so I guess now it's back to waiting and keeping my fingers crossed.

I agree that the more people who contact RootsWeb support to complain, the greater the possibility they will correct the problem. That is assuming they haven't changed their minds and decided to turn off access sooner than they had promised.

Are you saying that we no longer have access to our pages?  Before I waste hours fixing my site, I need to know I can actually update the site.

I apologize not to have any idea as to what is happening now. I thought I had another few months.

I got this response from Rootsweb about an hour ago:

Thanks for getting back to us,

We've forwarded your case to our development team to have your account and webpage check.

Although, we cannot tell you the exact timeframe however, we will do our best to help you resolve the issue immediately. We'll let you know once this has been fixed or when we figure out the error.

We all thought we had another few months.

The latest response to my report of an FTP problem was to request my IP address:
"We've forwarded your case to our development team to have your account and webpage check. Can you also sent us your IP address? We will be needing it to troubleshoot or debug the error. For you to get the IP address, you may ask Google 'What is my IP address?'. "

If you or anyone has not yet filed an error report, be sure to include your IP address as well as a copy of your FTP program error log; and/or your username, and the host name to which you attempted to connect.

I’m disheartened by the declining work ethic, not just in this case but across the web. I’m a retired programmer; if I had deployed changes that broke the site, I’d be expected to have a backout script in the deployment kit that could be run to return the site to its previous working state.  Clearly that is not a thing at Rootsweb/Ancestry, and at other sites I’ve seen. Then there’s the automatic assumption that it’s you, not them, that is at fault. Here is a paragraph from their first reply to me;

In my reply to this email, I asked, among other things, “since when”? No answer to that. Any changes they made that broke access for people not in the U.S. is an outrage, considering that there are many freepages sites uploaded from around to world. I have to assume that the request for IP address is related to this. They haven’t asked me for mine yet. Next they’ll want my DOB or SS# 😏.

Beth, While I agree with your frustration, several of us have finally received responses indicating that they will check into it. The difference between the old RW HelpDesk, and the "help" desk today, is that Ancestry's responders are given scripts for responses. They have no understanding of the problem; they just parrot whatever they have been told to say. For example -- "The website is still working as designed" has nothing to do with the ability of contributors to the website to edit their contributed content.

All we can do is hope that the problem of dozens if not hundreds of us are no longer to update/edit our sites "until early 2024" will be acknowledged and corrected.

Again, I urge everyone subscribed to this list to file a complaint using the form at
https://support.rootsweb.com/s/contactsupport

Include your username, the hostname you have entered in your FTP program, and your IP address, which you can obtain by Googling "what is my ip address"

"We really appreciate your patience and understanding. If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know."

It was from a different responder than all the others I've gotten and just maybe acknowledges that the error might be on their end -- I hope.

Hi Pat,

I am listening because I can not find the old words needed to go to my two websites ...i.e the number for the rootsweb to get me on to my website. and what channel it was. i.e. I see FTP but nothing written against it; users.freepages.rootsweb.com nothing written beside that; Genealogy_html nothing written besides that..if need be; mokurai and I appear to have a new password which I would have added when Rootsweb had finished playing with my website and taken certain information off my site that was Genealogy to me and would be interesting to my great grandkids as they are all my cars I have owned ..... well most of them ..... and can be classed as veterans now. i.e. 1952 Ford Anglia, 1956 Morris Minor convertible, etc. Oh ... I see the word Testing with the word None after it. Below that I have http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mokurai/

Turned the page and appear to have the other website, for POWER et al DNA Project. Once again nothing beside the word FTP but has Remote: in front of it, then has users.freepages.rootsweb.com nothing written beside it, nothing beside that; and then  comes two different parts with nothing after them: genealogy_html and history_html (as if there are two different parts to the website. Can't remember back to 2002 when I started the sites up, which one I used, or decided upon. Then it has dnapower and a new password when they gave me my websites back in about August/September 2017.

Appreciate it if you have the various parts to try to go to my websites so I can see if I too have lost my websites to Ancestry ....or as mentioned they have sold it off to www.amazon.com I am referring to what channel number I need etc.  Thanks.

Haere,

Warren C. O.. Power.
