  Fellow pilots -

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to take the Wilderness First Aid course taught by Josh Norris and others, I am hosting the class in Corvallis.  We have a group of CPC pilots attending and there will be room for others if you are interested.  Instead of summarizing, I'll repost Josh's invite:

Hey Flying friends!

I wanted to give dates and a quick bit of info about our upcoming Free flight specific WFA certification course. November 5 & 6th. Here is a weblink to details/photos/and videos of courses:

Cost pays for materials (including a kit for your harness!) and certification fees etc. A paramedic/wild med instructor from Bend is also volunteering to help teach this course to our community of local pilots. This year we are being hosted by Bill Briskey, just north of Corvallis. There will be camping available, as well we will be adjusting the schedule around flying at PB. We plan on having simulators hung up for those who come down on Friday that want to practice tree rescue etc. Additionally, we will run a CPR certification class (for the cert fee $25) Saturday night for those who want to do that.

This 16-hour class starts at 8am Sat and Sun so if you want to reduce your travel time, you are welcome to sack out inside the shop or bring your own tent or mobile accommodations.  More details to follow!

I am always energized by those in our community willing to put in the time to make us better at being a great community!

Let me know if you have any questions,

Josh

If you followed the link, you found that the course is $200.  Half of that goes toward the first aid kit you'll end up with and the rest is for the certification cost and miscellaneous materials.  Since Discover Paragliding strongly supports the concept that it can be valuable for everyone to know how to help their flying buddy should they get hurt, they allow Josh to use their web site's financial transaction mechanism to simplify the signup process for the class.  Discover gets nothing but satisfaction that more pilots are getting trained in Wilderness First Aid.  Also note that both instructors are volunteering to teach the course.  So the dollar per pound value is pretty high.

Since I'm hosting the event, I can provide some more info about accommodations and such.  The class is intense, cramming lots of info into 16 class hours.  That means long days and you will benefit if you can cut out the travel time.  If you prefer a motel, check out the options in Monmouth, Albany, or Corvallis, all about 10 miles away.  There is plenty of room (20 acres) to throw down a sleeping bag; you can park your carcass on the wood floor in the shop, or you can bring a tent or even park a motorhome/trailer contraption.  If you are early there are hook-ups too.

If you stay here, plan on bringing your own cooking equipment and food.  There seems to be enough interest to light off the wood-fired pizza oven on Saturday, so here are some options - bring your own dough and ingredients, or pitch in $10 and we'll provide the makin's for you to make your own pizza, or bring something else to cook for yourself.  If you don't plan to stay here, you'll still probably want to bring a lunch each day so you don't get hangry.

Friday:  I'm hoping it might be flyable at Peterson Butte; weather permitting you still might get in some kiting practice at my place, and there will be tables to spread out your kit inside if you want to repack your reserve.  There's talk about learning some tree escape techniques.  We'll have two simulators hanging up for practice throws or just making adjustments.

Saturday:  Class starts at 8am.  Lunch break around noon.  Dinner around 5.  CPR class starts sometime after 6pm for two hours, with an extra $25 for the certification.

Sunday: Class starts at 8am.  Lunch break at noon, and done by 5pm.

Date: November 4-6
Location: 39101 Military Road Monmouth, OR 97361

Call me if you have questions.
