Is the Richmond, Virginia Google Technology User Group still active?  There's only been one posting on here and I haven't seen anything else about it.

Hi Jeff,

I'm the group's "organizer." The RVA GTUG didn't gather much momentum or activity, as you've seen. I had a Major Life Event late last year that has prevented me from investing any significant amount of time in trying to get a meeting together. If there is interest, I could certainly be convinced to try reviving things. We might try for something less ambitious than a full-blown presentation event. Even if it's just a few people sitting around talking shop for an hour, that would be a good start.

- Isaac

Isaac had a baby in November or December last year.  I don't think that there was ever very much activity but I think there would be potential.  It would probably be helpful if there was a meeting every so often.

I would be interested in either a face-to-face chat to talk shop or a telecon .

There is a lunch on Wednesday at Capital Ale House in Innsbrook with the Richmond Software Craftsman Group ( http://groups.google.com/group/RSCG) if you want to use that as a venue to talk with more local developers about the Google user group.

I would get together with other local Google developers to talk tech and see what everyone is working on. Maybe even have speakers now and then to talk about different technologies or just watch one of the Google developer videos as a group to discuss it.

Jeff,

I'm going to try to make it out there for lunch tomorrow. Is it a large group, hard to miss? Or should I call/IM someone when I get there?

I think it's going to be a fairly large group.  You should probably RSVP on the Google group thread if you think you'll come on out.

Membership in that group is by invitation only. If I get approved in time, I'll post over there too.

Hey Isaac,  Sorry I didn't get a chance to introduce myself better at the lunch last week.  I had to hurry back to run an errand and get back to work.

Is anyone else interested in getting the GTUG restarted?

Jeff, I had to run too - slave to the almighty billable hour. But I enjoyed the lunch and conversation. I hope to join the next RSCG meeting as well.

Regarding a GTUG meeting: how's August 11th for a strawman date? And does anyone know of a space we can use for free?

August 11th will probably work for me.

Fwiw, the whole week of Aug 8-12 does not work for me.

Wietze, I could do the first week in August. The 17th is the JUG meeting and I would rather not overload that week.

Does anyone else favor, say, August 4th?

Jeff Layton

As far as I know, the 4th would work for me.

Great. Let's put 8/4 on our calendars.

That still leaves us needing a venue. Given that we're probably only a handful of people, a table at at coffee shop would do. Any ideas, besides Starbucks?

Daily Grind across from Short Pump?

Web site says they close at 5:00 PM. Something open after work hours, maybe 5:30-6:30 PM, would be better.

There's a small room in the food court at Regency Mall that is usually empty. There's another Daily Grind/Daily Java there with the same food/coffee & all the other food court food, too.

I'm open to anywhere really.

Me too.  I work downtown, but live in the far West End, so after work around Short Pump is great.

Suggestion: how about the Panera across from the Short Pump mall?  South side of the street, near Bertucci's,

Sure, let's try the food court at Regency. I've added a meeting to the group calendar (http://rva.gtugs.org/events) for August 4th, 6:00 PM. There should have been an invite sent from Google Calendar to the whole group as well.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Quick update: we're probably going to be moving the August 4th meeting to an actual conference room!

I met a couple of people from Genworth Financial at today's RJUG meeting. They have offered us the use of their facilities for GTUG meetings. I'll be working out the details in the next couple of days and let everyone know whats happening. One thing I'll need from all of you is real names so that we can get Genworth visitor badges. If you haven't already, please set your real name in Google Groups and be sure to check "yes" on the Google Calendar event. I'll be sending over the names of yes/maybe attendees shortly before the meeting so we can get by security.
