Thanks to everyone who made it out to Genworth Financial yesterday for our first meeting!
And a big thanks to Kim Mahan and Jay Campbell from Genworth for volunteering their facilities and hosting the meeting. For those who couldn't make it: I hope we'll see you there next time!
To recap quickly:
- We introduced ourselves. We come from pretty diverse backgrounds, but all share an interest in Google technology.
- I laid out my vision for the group: in the short term, we need to grow our membership base and encourage members to present on topics where they have knowledge and experience. We also need to find event sponsors, because talking about technology is hungry work. Longer term, I want us to be successful enough that we can attract higher profile speakers, people whose work you've heard of and want to see give a talk in person. Or even better, if those people are locals, we can make members out of them! I will also be on the lookout for opportunities to have Googlers visit our group.
- We should brain storm ideas for applications that would make good code lab/hackathon projects at a future event. This could raise the groups profile as well as giving everyone who participates something to fatten up their résumé.
- Jay offered to set up a Google Apps domain to aid collaboration within the group. Thanks, Jay!
- RVA GTUG members want to connect on Google+. If you need an invite, ask!
I've created a Google Moderator series for the group with two topics, Event Ideas and Scheduling. Please head over, submit your ideas, and vote. If you'd like to see other Moderator topics added, let me know.
Google Moderator series for RVA GTUG:
This is your community. Let me know what's working for you, or what you would like to see improved. And spread the word! The more members we have, the more collective knowledge we have to share and the better our prospects for the future.
Thank you all for making this possible.
