Rutledge Shade Tree Commission - ArbNet Accreditation

In the Spring and Summer of 2023, the Rutledge Tree Shade Commission started a tree survey of Borough residents' trees.   There are many tree lovers and tree tenders in the Borough.  Walking, jogging and cycling through Rutledge is a real pleasure because of our tree canopy and the beautiful  landscaping and gardens.

In addition to our Spring and Fall tree plantings, a new project of the Shade Tree Commission is to label and catalogue the trees for educational purposes–celebrating our trees!  We are working towards having the Borough accredited as an Arboretum Level 1 under the ArbNet organization (www.arbnet.org).

RSTC started this project by labeling the first 11 trees that, all visible from the Borough's sidewalks.  To be accredited as an Arboretum Level 1, we will need to have a minimum of  25 different species, varieties or cultivars of trees and woody plants.  The earlier survey confirms the Borough has well over this number and we hope to reach it soon. A  map and educational resources will also be provided to residents and neighbors.

If you want to participate in this Arboretum project and/or get a label for your tree contact the Shade Tree Commission at rutledge....@gmail.com.  To find out more on the Rutledge Shade Tree Commission go to

Fourth of July Celebration will be Friday, July 4th! Check the attached flier for more information and scheduling. The parade registration starts at 9:30AM and we will host the welcome ceremony, good neighbor awards, and games at Triangle Park beginning at  11:00 am, immediately following the parade. The weather looks great!

Sanitation Committee

Next Yard Waste is Monday July 7th

Please be sure to properly prepare your yard waste in a way that is collectible by the haulers. Use your toters, personal cans, paper bags, or tie with twine. Yard waste on tarps or in plastic bags is not acceptable due to difficulty to lift.

The Sanitation Committee visited our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Delaware on June 17th.  This MRF, Delaware Solid Waste Authority, partners with recyclers (like Republic and CAP Glass) to process our recycling. We’ll post some facts each week!

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Plastic bags are terrible for the machines!! Do not put them in your toters for any reason!

  • Cardboard should be packed loosely–not stuffed inside another cardboard box.

  • Plastic bottles should have their lids left on so they don’t compress too much–and we shouldn’t crush our bottles at all! This hinders the machines from sorting effectively.

  • White paper is highly sought after, but we should make sure all paper we recycle is at least as large as a postcard.

REMINDER!  Mattress must legally be wrapped in a plastic bag for our hauler to collect; this is Pennsylvania law. These bags can be purchased online from many retailers or from local home improvement stores.

Save the date:  A textile and bicycle/sewing machine recycling event is scheduled for 10/18/2025 at Rose Tree Park.  More details to follow.

We are still looking for responses to our Spring Sanitation Survey.  ( See Link below)  Hoping for 50 responses (we are at 25 so far).  Once we get close to that number, we will respond to your comments.  So, please take a moment to complete the survey and get us to 50 responses. which is only 16% of the households in Rutledge.

Resident Survey for our new Sanitation!
