Dear Neighbors,

On Monday night, Borough Council, in partnership with our Mayor, officially declared a state of emergency for Rutledge in response to the announced closure of the Crozer-Chester Health System.

The Council voted to pursue this path for three reasons.

First, this declaration clears the path for the Borough to join together with neighboring municipalities and our partners in the County to enable a swift response to fill the void left by Prospect Health and ensure access to our most critical services remain available to everyone who needs them.

Second, this declaration sets the stage for taking steps to lay the foundation for a more sustained and sustainable approach to ensuring access to these services for the Borough and the County.

Finally, this declaration is a statement of our solidarity with communities across this County. The closure of these facilities hurts all of us – not just those in need of the services provided, but also our friends, family, and neighbors who worked with dedication and compassion to ensure all of us could find care when we needed it.

The announced closure by Prospect Health follows months of brinkmanship and years of service cuts that have slowly, and inevitably, hollowed out the health system in the County. It’s time to close this chapter and start thinking about our future.

As events continue to unfold, we’ll be sharing the most recently available information in our weekly news.

We believe the residents of our community deserve better. We believe our neighbors deserve better. We believe our County deserves better. Together, we will build something better.

In service,

Jody A. Roberts

President, Rutledge Borough Council
