HiTOPS is offering Street Smart, a new Center for Disease Control (CDC) program for twelve, at-risk youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT).
HiTOPS is a non-profit adolescent health center in Princeton, NJ where trained sexuality educators offer classes to teens on subjects like postponing sexual involvement, pregnancy prevention, avoiding HIV and other STIs, intimate partner violence, and homophobia reduction.
Our educators have recently been certified to teach Street Smart, a comprehensive and interactive program offering significant benefits to at-risk LGBT youth.
A 2010 CDC study indicates that LGBT youth are at higher than average risk for exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, intimate partner violence, and drug and alcohol abuse.
· Street Smart is a free, interactive program for at-risk LGBT youth between the ages of 14 and 18
· Street Smart consists of ten sessions with each session lasting 1½ to 2 hours
The ten sessions include:
1. HIV and other STI’s – transmission and risk reduction strategies
2. Personalized Risk – identifying high risk behaviors and triggers
3. How to Use Condoms – skill building for talking about and using condoms
4. Drugs and Alcohol – impact on risk-taking behaviors
5. Recognizing and Coping with Feelings – identifying coping strategies and problems solving skills
6. Negotiating Effectively – learning to stand up for personal values
7. Self-Talk - using thoughts and self-talk to help make safer decisions.
8. Safer Sex – understanding choices to engage in risky behaviors and how to argue against rationalization
9. HiTOPS Health Center visit – opportunity to ask questions of a health care provider and make plans for follow-up visit
10. Individual Session – creating a strategy for safer sex behaviors
How can you help?
Street Smart is not for every LGBT adolescent. HiTOPS is looking for 12 LGBT adolescents who have or are engaging in high risk behaviors such as unprotected sex, multiple partners, drug and alcohol use, and prostitution. The Street Smart group is being formed on a first come, first served basis.
