With the negative, stereotypical and sometimes racist views being spread amongst the Reading Sangat, below is a very good article on the importance of Langar Seva and the meaning of Langar, through the eyes of volunteer Harbans Kaur at UNITED SIKHS. PLEASE READ AND FORWARD.

Why do I take food to the hungry?

In my eyes, Guru Ka langar is food given by Waheguru be it an apple from the garden, or cooked plate from a Gurdwara. All food is blessed. Those that are on the streets are there because of some problems either at home with parents or other. It could have been my own child.

When ever we can spare the time, we give them food. Even stray dogs are given a piece of roti. If we can give, we do so. Our seva gives us rewards in many ways. We get blessings straight from the heart of the hungry soul on the street. Waheguru looks after the scruffy one at the gate!! We go where no one wants to go.

'I have been clean from injecting illegal drugs for eight months now, ever since you (UNITED SIKHS volunteers) came here to see us. I'm now on a drug treatment programme'

'Do I have to pay for these clothes?' 'No, they are for you, all free'

'I don't really eat proper food, usually just takeaways, this is the first meal I've had in a long time'

'It's really nice that you come all this way to visit us, you're a generous lot of people'

Health is a state of wellbeing. Far reaching as complete wellbeing may be, it calls on spheres other than healthcare to help deliver this definition of health, The components of wellbeing vary between people, societies, cultures and eras.

Wellbeing is a concept shared across all human boundaries and is the final common pathway to which all these varying components lead.

Seva- leads to the state of physical, mental and social wellbeing which gives a sense of completeness. Read on....

WHY DO SEVA?

School of nature is the wisdom and has patience to teach us repeatedly. Natural garden exhibits its beauty in its glorious colours and shades, not only during the day but also at night but the display is heightened with seasons. Left uncared for, gradually, the weeds will inventively encroach, initially sparingly then gradually proliferates widely and march it beyond recognition.

Sewa of any form is tending to the Garden with your mind and soul. Whatever you choose, it will be your contribution to nature. As soon as you put in a nice plant, weeds will grow around it which you have to invest your earnest efforts to keep them at bay. Similarly, in sewa you start with all good intentions, someone will try to undermine your earnest efforts. Let it not be your Achille's heel, be steadfastly positive. Universal force is on your side. The negativity will be confined to the Universal compost heap. The weeds will keep coming, keeping you on your toes and on your hands and knees. Make your contribution count without losing heart or hope.
