I have two right now. One was weak going into winter and not sure if
they are going to make it. Who are you getting your Russians from?

Porter Bees in Pickens SC. http://www.porterfarmbees.com/ picking up
2 nucs in May. I started with 2 hives (Italian packages) down to one
hive now- have my fingers crossed they will make it through the
winter. I figure I will have a small scale experiment if the Italians
make it. Want to see the differences between the two varieties.
Honey production, temperment, disease resistance.

My first hive two seasons ago of Italians didn't make it into the
fall. They started out strong, then the late summer drought, mites
and robbing took their toll. They were very gentle bees that I could
even go into without smoke or a veil. Some experienced beekeepers
think that I got a queen that petered out and stopped. I got my first
package of Russians later that same spring and they did OK and
survived the first winter with feeding. I also got a swarm taken from
a building "freebees" (they were the colony that brought in the mites)
and they were ferocious robbers. They finished off my Italian hive.

This past year I got two nucs from Porter. It was a very lousy summer
with all the rain and I got them very late. I should have supported
them more with feeding as nectar was low because of the excessive rain
and I lost one in late summer (my fault).

So now I have two Russian hives. I am afraid that my weak hive may
not have made it through this cold. I will have to wait until it
warms up to find out. Temperatures didn't get above 20 F today.

Agreed. This summer was tough-  Even if you didn't have bees (or crops) it was alot of rain.  I'm  hoping next year's weather will be a little more bee friendly.

Supposed to get into the 40's next week.  If the winds not blowing.  I might lift the lid to see if any made it through this cold snap.
