Research on U.S. Health and Healthcare

The mission of RUSH is to support anthropological inquiry into contemporary issues related to health and biomedical healthcare in the United States (U.S). This SMA Special Interest Group aims to provide a forum for discussion amongst scholars and professionals from around the world who critically investigate or engage with U.S. health policy and practice. Unlike any already-existing SIGs, RUSH will encourage research and collaborations that are carried out specifically in the U.S., with a focus on the particular social, political, and economic and structures that shape, uniquely, health and healthcare in the nation. The group is designed to foster a broad range of interests centered on this focus area. While often making valuable contributions to conversations to the anthropology of global health and other subfields, scholars undertaking medical anthropological research on health and healthcare the U.S. also share distinctive challenges, opportunities and insights that merit focused discussion across topical specializations. Areas of interest of RUSH include but are not limited to: state and local health policy and administration; health and healthcare for underserved populations and veterans; insurance and insurers; health professional education, health workforce issues, and environmental health. Research and collaboration within the group will also address the causes of and responses to health and healthcare disparities along lines of race, class, gender, sexuality, and immigration status, in addition to other axes of diversity.

This forum is a space for sharing resources, events, ideas and announcements relevant to the mission of the group and its members.
