Ifyou've played any of the versions before 1.10 (1.4.2-1.9.4) during when they were the bees knees, like me, chances are you've came across this funny nat. This challenge exploits a quirk in the mineshaft spawn code in 1.4-1.9.4 versions of Minecraft that allows Mineshafts to spawn above ground and floating. Sounds impossible, right? Nope... This 100% works in 1.4-1.9.4 versions of minecraft.
The way that mineshafts generate in this, however, are what make it extremely hard. Build up, gather resources, fight mobs, fall and die. That's basically how it all happens. The way you do it is break the planks, craft stuff, open chests, and before nightfall you break all the spawners in your area. After that, it's just slashing at the mobs, hitting them off in majestic glory. Yeah, it's fun.
I wouldn't recommend it, but you can try the previous code in 1.7 versions of minecraft. Since Mineshafts are much rarer in 1.7 and the chance variable doesn't seem to work, it is much harder because it's harder to find a mineshaft in the first place.
This does work in any version since 1.4, the version they added Superflat customization.
Even better, you can actually change how common mineshafts are; if you play this in 1.7 or later mineshafts will be 40% as common but you can get the old frequency back by adding (chance=0.01) after "mineshaft"; they will even generate in the same locations and with the same structure, only different chest loot. This may not work if the biome is set to Mesa though; mesa mineshafts also appear to not generate if they are in the air.
Or even (chance=1.0) - which will generate a mineshaft in every single chunk (they will be less common within 1280 blocks of 0,0), although I would not recommend such a high chance:

_code_format (note - the Wiki still gives the default chance in 1.6.4 and earlier versions; I doubt they even realize that mineshafts were made less common in 1.7 since there is no mention of it anywhere on their pages for 1.7 or mineshafts. The stronghold information is also outdated since they increased the number to 128 in 1.9; a look at some 1.10 source I found shows that Superflat uses the same values as default).
ETA: For a bigger challenge you can also omit all blocks from the preset so the mineshafts are floating above the void (you may have to find a seed that spawns you on a mineshaft and even then it may take multiple respawn attempts - be sure to get a bed!)
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

EDIT: The main problem is that the mineshafts don't generate above ground now. So they must have fixed it. I've tested, and found that it works in any version before 1.10 and after 1.4.2 (1.4.2-1.9.4) so that's what I'm going with here.
