Working out a training schedule with dates and distances is a great
way to achieve your running goal(s). However, where can you do those
long runs and how do you know how far you are running?

One way is to carry a GPS.

I use http://walkjogrun.net/ to map out my running routes.

This website uses google maps and offers a fair amount of accuracy.
You can even use the satellite photo version of the maps to plot
trail runs (assuming the trails are visible).
