The run was fun, (inspite of me getting a sore knee at the end). Was happy to do my longest run of 26 kms (albeit at a very slow pace).

But i would have loved it better if the chalk marking directions were a little more frequent, especially in the section amidst the woods, where quite a few of us got lost (and most importantly missed the water station hid in the woods).

Anyway, was still fun inspite of the odd things that need to be ironed out.

The location is terrific.

Sudhir

Hi Dinesh/All,

Let's have a convoy going from Cubbon Park on Sunday the 7th.

Let's all meet near the Jewel De paragon Junction (Near Queen's statue at
Cubbon park) by 5:30AM and leave from there by 5:45AM. People who know the
route can lead the way and others can follow.

Our team will have to reach ONV much earlier so other runners who know the
route and can go through Cubbon park please mail the group and confirm your
participation in the runners convoy on Sunday. :)

Arvind,

Can someone give me directions in the manner by which a person like me, a
high school drop out, can understand and get to the ONV location.
Please dont google me but say head towards Jallahali Circle from
Malleshwram, head towards the next traffic light on the Tumkur Road. At the
traffic light, turn right, head until you reach the lake and.......
and.......... and   if you get lost, get in touch with me on phone no or
wait until we send the recovery team.
Thank you very much in advance.

Hi all,

Adding to Sudhir, here are some of my suggestions for the ultra run in bangalore - mainly for the organisers

WATER STATIONS
- add more water stations - may be after every 4K
- have boards telling how far they are - 2K to go, 1K to go etc..........maybe have a fun theme to it!
- each water station should have a first aid kit and ice bags
- of course enough peanut butter jelly sandwiches and add some bars to the menu
- have two water dispensers - one with plain water and another with salts already mixed in it - have two diff tables so that the runner can decide where to go.
- boards in large letters to highlight which table has what
- have some volunteers to pass out water maybe 20 steps before each station - they will also motivate the runners to get to food and water faster
- have volunteers with sprays - hose pipes will do - there can be say two/three such points - esp where there is no shade - to keep the runners cool and comfy
- some music near the water stations

OTHER
- markings to be done at more places not only at turns
- use boards to highlight the route as well
- put the mileage down after say 5K on the boards along with route directions
- the route can be routed more thru the woods and try to reduce the unshaded portion of the run
- lots of cheer leaders and volunteers
- maybe two three rounds of meetings with them before the race day
- goody bags at the end of the race
- end of the race party - band/ show

T SHIRTS
- same t-shirt for men and women and encourage them to wear it for the run - choose material carefully therefore.

More suggestions as we go along but based on my prev runs, I think the key is the water station and cheering squad.

Hi Naina,

Thanks for the suggestions. Will certainly look into all the suggestions.

One of the main reasons for conducting this run was to get a good idea on organizing/logistics bit. We got a team of 6 yesterday and all of them were looking at different parts of the run just to get data on what issues will need to be addressed for the Ultra.

If others want to add to what Naina has said, you are most welcome.

Dear Arvind

Starting at 6 AM sharp is vital - so we must ensure that all participants turn up on time - for this a proper route map to ONV is essential and maybe we should have direction signs along the way. We should also provide estimated driving time and request all to report by 530 AM.

I noticed a few runners who carried water cups from the water stations and dumped them in the forest - request all runners to avoid any dumping of garbage - but we may need bigger garbage bins at the water points.

Regards

Sunil

Hi Arvind and everyone else at RFL.

The Googlegroup keeps me updated on all the news. It’s good to know that the family has grown to 725.

I am still very much a slave to the moods of my back and it will probably be a while before I can join up with you guys again. But missing out o all the action is really lousy.

Keep running.

Cheers

Hi,
All in all the run was very successful and I believe it gave the runners a feel of what it is going to be on the day of the ultra. The pit-stops had sandwiches and bananas which I think were of great help. I was feeling quite comfortable doing the run and tried a lot of different footing while running to check out which one of them is most comfortable in avoiding a very recently observed pain in my knees.

I second Sunil's comment about keeping the place clean and tidy. Unlike in usual marathon venues (which are usually within the city) this place is never going to be cleaned and whatever is left behind would just remain there till the end of their bio-degrading life-cycle. The beauty of such a place is the absence of man-made substances. Lets keep it like that. I hope the organizers of RFL will take special care to ensure the serenity of the place is not lost. Runners can themselves volunteer to clean up the place after the run.

I was wondering if we could encourage non-RFLers who have registered for the ultra to be a part of our training schedule or for such runs. Also are we doing enough to publicize this to the full, I dont remember seeing any big ads on this (sorry if I missed out any)

Along with Nainas excellent suggestions I'd add:

1. Make sure you have people stationed at the intersections where
people could get confused. They can point people in the right
direction.

2. Have volunteers along the route with cell phones in case anyone
gets into trouble and needs assistance.

3. Hand out small maps to the runners in case they want to use them
along the run and figure out where they are.

Good luck

Hi,

I think of the 3 options that you have given, the first one is the most
feasible.
Point 2: may not be possible, there is hardly any mobile coverage in and
around ONV.
Point 3: Best not to make this run a Treasure Hunt. We would like to keep
track of all runners at all points of time.

Cheers,
Nischal

Good luck

Nischal,

Not a treasure hunt, just a way of making people more comfortable with their surroundings if its their first time in that area. Most unmarked roads and trails are disorienting to people and this could help.
