So I guessed it was the firewall somehow. I tried disabling it both from GUI and from command line (netsh advfirewall all profiles off), to no avail. Tried logging on the pfw debug log, nothing there (the connection doesn't even start). There is no traffic to MySQL TCP port 3306 whatsoever - it gets stopped first.

I go to System and Security (Start > Control Panel > System and Security) and click on Windows Firewall, but nothing happens. If I stop the service, click on Windows Firewall, and then click on turn Windows firewall on or off (on the left) I get this:

I have a pfsense firewall given to me that is several years old. The version installed on it is 2.3.x and from 2017. I am unable to update it to 2.4.x. a) Accessing the internet directly. I do a bridging, and also NAT, but the client still cannot connect to the internet.

b) I downloaded the VMWare Tool 11 disk image, and mounted on the CD Drive. I can see the CD, but the setup cannot proceed as the image is created for 64bit windows, not 32 bit.

c) I downloaded the 32bit tool and copy the exe file onto a thumb drive. I am able to see the thumb drive at the VM console, but the WINXP did not display the thumb drive in the windows explorer.
