PHKC Alchemy Sandbox provides critical funding, mentoring, and connections to help founders build viable businesses ready for growth and sustainability. With the support from UMB Bank, this program will provide 20 businesses with up to $5k in grants that will directly support businesses with their back office, equipment cost, rental assistance, or general system needs.

The Homelessness Engagement Assistance Response Team, or HEART Austin, is a program in partnership with Urban Alchemy piloting a new approach to proactively engage with and address the needs of people experiencing homelessness downtown.

Currently, the Downtown Ambassadors and the Austin Police Department interact with people experiencing homelessness downtown more than 120 times a day on average. HEART Austin will help amplify these existing efforts.

HEART Austin will test a new approach to address the needs of people experiencing homelessness. In partnership with Urban Alchemy, the nonprofit that manages the ARCH and Eighth Street Shelter, the goal of the program is to reduce the unsheltered population by 75%.

Practitioners will work hand-in-hand with the Downtown Austin Alliance Ambassadors and Austin Police Department to de-escalate interactions and interventions to address and/or prevent mental health episodes, interrupt behavioral disturbances and prevent crimes.

The area between Congress Ave., and Brazos Street and 4th Street and 9th Street, as well the 5th Street to 7th Street blocks from Congress Ave., to the I-35 W frontage road and in the 200-300 block of 4th Avenue, including alleyways, are the high-need parts of downtown that the program will focus on.

The program will help identify new ways to improve outcomes for people experiencing homelessness based on individual needs. Utilizing the successful model from Urban Alchemy, HEART will have the boots-on-the-ground, proactive engagement that has been successful in other communities, resulting in lasting change.

HEART Austin is a fully-funded pilot program. The best way to help people living on the street is to donate resources and time to groups like Urban Alchemy, The Other Ones Foundation, Caritas of Austin and Austin ECHO, among many others.

San Francisco has a variety specialized teams that work in coordination to address mental health or substance use crisis calls, medical health and wellness, and street-condition-related matters. These teams are extensively trained in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, cultural competency, and de-escalation.

DEM will oversee HEART field operations together with Urban Alchemy, including routine collaboration to identify system and program needs, and to ensure integrity and consistency of services being delivered to the unhoused community. The team will operate seven days a week: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on weekends. Currently, HEART has one-time funding of $3 million, which was allocated in the FY 22-23 for a one-year pilot.

HEART will view experiences of homelessness through a trauma informed, compassionate and strength-based lens that will work to integrate a range of motivational and empowering strategies with a goal of building trust and productive engagement. Services include:

As part of the pilot program, a monthly data report will be produced that aggregates call volume, types, completed needs assessments, call dispositions/outcomes, and response time, and data re: requests for assistance from public safety, fire/medical/SCRT, and HSOC. The information will be segmented by neighborhood. A narrative section of the monthly report will summarize progress, success and challenges. The City will work with Urban Alchemy to review these reports during routine check ins, spotlighting opportunities for improvement.

We will be cruising next year on the Carnival Pride after the Funship 2.0 upgrades, and just wondering if drinks are covered from the Alchemy Bar... It looks like there is a "make your own drink" option and wasn't sure if that's covered. Any experience with this?

Also I know specialty coffees are not covered, lattes, cappuccinos etc. Which is disappointing. However, what about the coffee items on the bar menu? After dinner coffee liqueur? Espresso martinis? We had some sort of amazing blended chocolate coffee/rum drink each night after dinner while watching the nighttime pool deck movies on the Freedom :)

Yes and yes. Alchemy is covered by the cheers program. We tried most things on the menu and everything was covered. You can get regular coffee and add things like bailey's to it. I have never seen coffee at one of the bars, only in MDR and in lido deck. All martinis are covered in the cheers program, chocolate, espresso, cosmos, etc.

You really have to calculate how much you will drink to see if the program is worthwhile. Carnival has a 15 drink limit, so you will need to have at least 6 drinks a day to just break even. You and your cabin mate, if over 21 must both purchase the program.

Most do the make your own drinks are $8.95, at least they were last time I had the pleasure of sitting at the Alchemy Bar! And I highly recommend NOT ordering off the menu. A few drinks here and there that you want to try, sure. But most of the mixologists have signature drinks and a wide array of the at that, so ask them!

As for the coffee drinks, from my experience, the liquor is covered, but if you ordering a speciality coffee, it is not. At the atrium bar and coffee bars, you have to pay for a coffee, at a discounted price (the nonalcoholic price), and then you get a shot to add as part of the cheers program.

Thanks so much everyone for your responses! I wasn't sure what the price of the drinks at the alchemy bar were like, especially the "make your own." I will definitely have to think about it being worth it or not. My husband and I are not really beer/wine drinkers, we tend to like the more expensive drinks on the menu, martinis, mojitos, etc. and I LOVE coffee, but $50 is definitely a lot... We would have to do about 5-6 of these a day to make it worth it. But it looks like most of these would be covered. Very interesting about the alchemy bar, it sounds like a lot of fun!!!

All drinks at Alchemy are covered under Cheers at 8.95 and you can even request upgraded liquor for 9.95. We got way more than our moneys worth and can't wait for our next cruise to have a few cucumber sunrises again.

Urban Alchemy brings experience from managing outdoor shelters, hiring those with lived experience and providing services to those moving from the streets to outdoor shelters as they work to transition from life unsheltered to housing or whatever is next in their paths.

Once the Peninsula Crossing Safe Rest Village is open and Urban Alchemy has operations underway, conversations with the neighbors and stakeholders will restart regarding the Good Neighbor Agreement for this village.

Urban Alchemy is a social enterprise that transforms people and places through respect and compassion to heal communities challenged by the intersection of extreme poverty, mental illness, addiction and homelessness.
