'Correct' upgrade process from 4.17.6 to 5.x?

I've been trying to find a document or webpage that describes the correct upgrade path to move from version 4.17.6 to version 5.x

Can I upgrade from 4.17.6 to 5.0.2 and then jump straight to 5.9.0? Or can I jump straight from 4.17.6 to 5.9.0?

Some guidence would be helpful. Thanks.

Please test that upgrade process in a non-prod environment first.
