Greetings, RUME colleagues!

I am one of the co-PIs on a recently-funded NSF STEM Education Organizational Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (STEM Ed OPRF) project, and our project team (Lisa Benson, Kelly Lazar, Matt Voigt, Matthew Boyer, Karen High and Katreena Thomas) is organizing a recruitment event, the STEM Education Postdoctoral Opportunities Summit. We are planning this virtual event on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 5 - 7 pm Eastern.

The goals of the Summit are to connect doctoral students and recent doctoral graduates with postdoctoral opportunities nationwide, to elevate emerging scholars, and to provide professional networking pathways for a diverse pool of applicants. The plan is for STEM education doctoral candidates or recent graduates interested in a postdoc position (recruited to attend through our professional networks) to submit abstracts about their research interests and career goals. These would be shared with those of us with available postdoc positions. Similarly, each postdoc program will provide an overview of their program that would be shared with interested attendees ahead of time.

At the Summit itself, potential applicants will give brief presentations about their research, similar to the Three Minute Thesis format. Those of us with open postdoc positions may then give short presentations about our programs to recruit applicants, depending on the number of attendees and as time allows. The session will conclude with time for some type of “speed networking” session in which potential applicants can connect with representatives of the participating postdoc programs in breakout rooms. All contact information for attendees will be shared with interested postdoc programs even if they are not able to participate in the Summit. Similarly, the list of available opportunities and contact information will be shared with interested applicants even if they are not able to participate in the Summit.

Please pass this message on to anyone you know of who is recruiting applicants for a postdoc position. Anyone interested in participating in the Summit to recruit applicants, even if just to provide information about a postdoctoral opportunity and receive the list of potential applicants, should complete this information form by Friday, Oct. 5. We will be in contact soon thereafter to organize a planning meeting.

Information specifically for doctoral students or recent doctoral graduates interested in attending will follow in a couple of weeks, once we know how many and the types of programs that will be participating in the Summit.

Thank you!

Eliza Gallagher
