Dear RUME Community,
The Interdisciplinary Studies concentration with an emphasis in Mathematics/Statistics Education, offered through the PhD in Mathematical Sciences program at Utah State University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, prepares individuals for careers in academia, educational leadership, consulting, industry, and other scholarly pursuits in mathematics and statistics education. Faculty in the Mathematics and Statistics Education group lead research in areas such as mathematical modeling, student cognition, embodied cognition, intuition, undergraduate and graduate education, quantitative reasoning and literacy, data science education, and teacher preparation.
All doctoral programs of study (after a Masters) require 45 or more credits, at least 30 credits
numbered 6000 or higher, including research credits. For students entering the doctoral program directly from a bachelors degree 72 total credits are required, with at least 18 credits of Dissertation Research. The Interdisciplinary Studies specialization requires at least 9 credits of coursework in the students chosen interdisciplinary area (e.g., education). The student’s PhD supervisory committee should include two persons in the student’s selected interdisciplinary area, and the comprehensive examination should have a significant interdisciplinary component. Following the comprehensive exam, the student is expected to defend a dissertation proposal and successfully write and defend the dissertation.
To be admitted:
