Folks may be interested in attending this workshop (online, Nov 17-18). Mathematics education research was not covered in the 2012 publication, but there is a RUME scholar on the committee this time (Daniel Reinholz, San Diego State).  The agenda is not published yet and I don’t know if there will be opportunities for participants to contribute a RUME perspective.

Hi everyone,

In case you have not already heard, NASEM is hosting a DBER workshop in November called Status of the Field of Discipline-Based Education Research: A Workshop.

Please forward this message to those you know are doing and/or following DBER on your campus as well as other campuses. :)

Cheers,
Leilani

Hi All --

At this point we have a draft schedule, but I think we're just waiting to confirm all of the speakers before it is made publicly available.

The thing I can confidently say is that we are interested in cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to DBER, so having a RUME perspective alongside science and engineering disciplines would be very helpful. This is directly built into the structure of panels and presentations, where we are aiming to represent a diversity of disciplines. If folks have specific questions, you can definitely reach out to me individually; I hope to see you there! It's going to be a great time.

Thank you Sandra, for elevating this!

Best,
-Daniel

Hi All --

I've had a few folks respond to me off of the list, so I wanted to provide an update here with more information. We just had a planning committee meeting today, and while plans are still being finalized (so some changes are possible), I can share some additional information.

1. The registration form currently allows for virtual registration only, with an option to indicate interest in attending in person. This is because physical space is limited. There still is space in person, so if you're interested in that, please register and hopefully I'll see you there! The goal is to bring in DBER scholars from a variety of disciplines, career stages, institutions, etc.

2. For folks who are virtual, there will be multiple opportunities to participate. All of the Q&A sessions will use Slido (or something similar), so that virtual and in-person folks ask questions in the same way. There will also be small group sessions, and those would be structured to give online folks a chance to discuss with each other.

3. Hopefully the agenda will be finalized and ready to be shared publicly in the next couple of weeks. I can confirm that there will be an opening session looking back at the 2012 report and changes since that time. That session will be followed by a presentation and a panel discussion on a commissioned paper about the role of theory and methods in DBER. In addition to break out sessions on several topics (we are still finalizing) there will be presentations on disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to thinking about DBER, and panels on the value of DBER, how it influences undergraduate teaching and learning, and future directions for DBER work.

Here is the link for the workshop that includes the registration form: https://www.nationalacademies.org/event/45297_11-2025_status-of-the-field-of-discipline-based-education-research-a-workshop

Best,
-Daniel
