I've been translating documents, manuals, business forms and promotional brochures for years, but more recently I have begun to do more Children's Books. That is a natural step, as I write my own in English and Spanish. Putting your information "out there" in another language increases your market, but Children's Books also serve as a language learning tool. Native readers will understand their language and language learners will learn in a fun way.

This is why you want a quality translator. Some people think they will save a few bucks and use an online translator. I've tried them for fun and laughed. Each English word can mean so many things that a computer cannot always put together the thought you intended. I tried looking up "stocking footed", which is rarely used in Spanish, and got this: la media pierna. La media can mean stocking. Pierna means leg. La media pierna can also mean "half leg".

Then, there is the difference in language preferences between countries. The countries do not speak different dialects, as many people assume. There is merely a difference in spoken accent and some vocabulary and language usage differences, like within the USA, and between other English speaking countries. We can understand other English speakers, but we know to allow for variances and merely ask what they mean if they throw out a word or expression unfamiliar to us.

A professional translator tries to take the audience into consideration. I learned my Spanish in Spain, but I don't use "vosotros" (you all) when I translate, unless I know the audience is in Spain. Likewise, if I were from Argentina or Guatemala, I would only use the "vos" (instead of "t", meaning you, someone very familiar to you) unless my expected readers were other "vos" users.

Not every native Spanish speaker can translate well. And not every native English speaker can write well. You want someone trained in the languages that knows them both enough to be able to interchange the languages without losing the continuity and mood you had intended. Your translator reflects on you.

This month I translated three children's books to Spanish. There were some discussions on punctuation, vocabulary, and other items, as the authors had other bilingual people read what I had written to see if I knew what I was doing. By the way, that's smart.

As with my writing, I always proof and reproof, read aloud, and proof again, then have more eyes read what I have written. Sometimes all of those eyes don't catch everything, but it's a pretty handy safety net. I do the same in Spanish.

Drawing from the successes of many Protocol Droids, the designers at Cybot Galactica condense the translating abilities of a 3PO-Series Protocol Droid unit into a tiny shell that can be worn around a person's neck or carried in a pocket. Thus, a person can carry a Personal Translator unit anywhere without having to rely on a Protocol Droid. The universal translator can translate verbal communications in the owner's language and up to three other languages of the owner's choosing. The device operates at the level of a DC 10 Droid Translator Unit. The translator has no photo receptors or Appendages, so it is not able to interpret nonverbal forms of communication such as sign language.

Recently I found this AI world and I was wondering if it would be possible to create a translator, strictly for personal use, that could create better translations than Google Translate (and possible even at the level of DeepL?) by selfhosting, without having to spend much.

By a blind research here on this site, I found Bart one to many mbart-large-50-one-to-many-mmt.

I tested a little with this but the results are not that good imho. When lines are short is okay but as soon as you write something elaborated, it start to makes grammar mistakes and other. I would classify this at the same level of Google translate honestly.

Sure, feel free to vent any time!! I personally believe that there is still a lot of good translation work out there, but there are also a lot more low-paying agencies, and a lot more translators willing to work at those rates, which makes things a lot harder!
