Arduino program is hanging

Hi all. I'm still a beginner. I installed the gator version of
Arduino. I opened and saved Blink as directed in the
instructions. When I verify / compile / cntrl r ,
the message says "Compiling..." and it freezes at that point . I must
close it using the control panel. Any suggestions? Thanks

My apologies, I just didn't wait long enough. It still doesn't
load but I'll mess around with that for awhile before posting here
again.
