SPARTANBURG, S.C. ---- The
Life University men's club rugby team defeated the Chicago
Lions 28-19 to win the USA Club Rugby Division I Eastern
Championship, and advance to the national championship in two
weeks.
The Running Eagles jumped out to a quick start as
Austin White broke
free for the team's first try.
Sam Cowley was
successful on the conversion. In the 14th minute, Cole
Shanilec barreled over the end line with another conversion
from Cowley for an early 14-0 lead.
Zac Mizell found space in the defense and dotted down a score
with another successful conversion as the Running Eagles led
21-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
John Louro finished
the scoring with seven minutes on the clock before the half as
another conversion saw Life University display a commanding
28-0 lead. Chicago found a bit of offense and scored its lone
try of the half with just seconds remaining, as the Running
Eagles led the Lions 28-5 at the half.
The Chicago Lions used the break to restructure its offense,
and finished the second half on a 14-0 run. Although the
Running Eagles did not score after the break, they did
minimize the damage the Lions could cause to earn the victory
28-19.
The venue as well as time for the national championship will
be announced soon. Life University will face the Austin Blacks
in the championship. Fans are encouraged to follow the Running
