Thirty-five years ago today, our country took a critical leap towards disability rights and inclusion. Thirty-five years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act officially prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities—including public school educators and students—and transformed countless lives.

But the journey towards justice and equity for people with disabilities is far from over. Commit to upholding the values of the ADA through advocacy, awareness, and action by signing our pledge here.

The passage of the ADA proves that when our communities advocate, we can make change. Activists fought for years to make legislation like the ADA possible. Now, it might be difficult to imagine a world without it—a neighborhood without curb cuts, public schools without ramps, inaccessible buses—but these needed accommodations are only possible because of people who spoke out and rallied around the ADA.

The ADA is a landmark piece of legislation that advanced disability rights across the country—now, let’s build on that foundation to make the next leap.

Sign our pledge to hear about NEA’s resources and programs on disability rights and inclusion.

The 35th anniversary of the ADA is a reminder that activism and advocacy are necessary to create change. Together, we make change possible.

In solidarity,

The NEA EdAction Team
