i have had a ruckus 2211 connected to a linksys (WRT54G) router for
about a month and everything was okay, but not great. after attempting
to move the router and ruckus to a different location in the house,
the signal worsened; so i moved everything back to the original
placement. now the internet only works when the computer is directly
connected to the ruckus.
i have already called technical support at ruckus and after 2 hours i
was told that they would call me back. then i came across this support
group and i thought i would give it a shot.
i set up the ruckus in bridge mode, connected it to the linksys, the
linksys to the computer. when i try to access the internet, the
browser just "thinks" for a long period of time and eventually says
"server was not found." the only thing i can access is the linksys
router page (now set up with a 192.168.2.1 IP address) [couldn't
access the ruckus page even when it was previously set up in router
mode] i was told to clone PCs MAC address, but that did not seem to
change the situation. and when i checked the status of the linksys,
the IP address was 192.168.1.100. after many unsuccessful steps,
[changing the LAN port on the linksys, resetting the ruckus, and i
think there was something else....... can't remember though] we
finally turned off both the linksys and the router and then starting
them up, and the address change to a 69.237.... address. the guy on
the phone thought that this would fix everything, but alas, the
internet still remained elusive.
so, if anyone has any info or assistance as to why i can connect to
the internet perfectly fine via a hardwire connection, but fails when
incorporating a router (which is also hardwired, i haven't even
attempted to see if the wireless signal actually carries through) i
would greatly appreciate it. i'm more of a novice when it comes to
this stuff (though trying my best), so a layman's explanation will
help me the most.
thanks in advance!
Based on your email below, I think you have the following set up:
Google WiFi AP - - wireless - - 2211 ----- wired---- wrt54g---wired---
your PC.
In this scenario, I would suggest that you configure your 2211 in
bridge mode. If you factory reset a 2211, it falls back to the router
mode, so you will want to make sure it is indeed in bridge mode. With
2211 in bridge mode, your wrt54g will get an IP address from Google
network, and will give out an IP address to your PC. In a typical
default mode, home routers such as wrt54g will give out 192.168.1.x to
your PC.
>From your email, though, if the wrt54g received an IP address of
192.168.1.100, it seems like your 2211 is still configured in router
mode, or somehow you configured a static IP address of 192.168.1.100.
Once your 2211 is in bridge mode, you can log in to 2211 only if you
configure your PC with a static IP address such as 192.168.0.100,
connect your PC directly to your 2211 using an Ethernet cable, and
type 192.168.0.254 to the URL window of the web browser on your PC.
If you are certain that your 2211 is in bridge mode, yet you are
having difficulty connecting to the internet, then you will have to
check the configuration of your wrt54g. In the bridge mode, your 2211
just bridges traffic between your wrt54g and Google network. It
doesn't hand out IP addresses, and there is no NAT function.
It is not a good idea to have multiple wireless APs in the vicinity.
They may interfere with each other. I would advise that you turn off
wireless radio on your wrt54g if it is possible.
Hope this helps.
thanks so much for the response!
yes, right now your outline of my setup is correct:
> Based on your email below, I think you have the following set up:
> Google WiFi AP - - wireless - - 2211 ----- wired---- wrt54g---wired---
> your PC.
and i followed your steps below and everything worked and checked out
in bridge mode:
> Once your 2211 is in bridge mode, you can log in to 2211 only if you
> configure your PC with a static IP address such as 192.168.0.100,
> connect your PC directly to your 2211 using an Ethernet cable, and
> type 192.168.0.254 to the URL window of the web browser on your PC.
afterward, in my system preferences, i switched the settings back to
automatic DHCP (while still wired from my computer to the 2211) and
have internet access like before. also, within the system preferences
and with the automatic DHCP mode set, the IP address was not
192.168.1.100 anymore, it was a new number, starting 64.9..... so, i
think that is a good sign, right?
k, then you talked about checking the configurations on my wrt54g:
> In the bridge mode, your 2211 just bridges traffic between your wrt54g and Google network.
> It doesn't hand out IP addresses, and there is no NAT function.
right now, the router IP address is set as: 192.168.2.1, with the PC's
MAC address cloned. are these the correct settings? or should they be
changed to coordinate better with the new 64.9.... number?
also, when you mentioned that i should not have multiple wireless APs
in the vicinity, is it okay if i am using the wrt54g to both hardwire
one computer AND wirelessly connect another computer on the other side
of the house? i mean, i feel like that is the point of a wireless
router, right? (i didn't mention the other computer before, because i
thought if the hardwired computer could work, then the wireless
transmission from the wrt54g should cooperate as well...)
let me know if you need any other information from me and i really
appreciate your help.
thank you!

Yes. It means that 2211 is working as configured.

What this means is that your wrt54g is configured to hand out
192.168.2.x IP addresses to your PCs. That should be fine too.

Which 2211 do you have? If it is 2211-DZ, you can eliminate your
wrt54g and just use 2211 by configuring 2211 in Dual Zone mode. With
2211 in dual zone mode, you can connect your desktop to 2211 using
Ethernet cable, and connect your other PC wirelessly to 2211 as well.
Otherwise, your set up should work just fine as it is with 2211
running in bridge mode and your wrt54g running as a wireless router.
To configure your 2211 to run in dual zone mode, you will have to
configure it to router mode and enable dual zone from Configuration-
>Wireless page.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
yeah, unfortunately i don't have the 2211-DZ and that's why i was
hoping to use the linksys (which was purchased prior to the 2211) but
the support guy whom i talked to two days ago told me the same thing:

so, i guess i will return to my vendor and see if i can exchange the
normal 2211 for the dual-zone, as the linksys obviously isn't working
correctly with the ruckus. it's just frustrating that all of the
settings seem to be accurate yet there is still a communication issue;
i just wish i knew more about all of this stuff to better assess the
situation...
but thank you very much for all of your help, i am most grateful!

Did you purchase 2211-ST?
All else fails, I would try to factory reset wrt54g, if you haven't
done so yet.
Cheers

hi,
great news! it works :) i just did a factory reset on the wrt54g and
after that everything started working. it feels a little
anticlimactic--all of that work and trying to decipher everything, and
a simple push of the reset button fixes all. but, i am not
complaining!
