Permissions issue with RVM

I'm not sure how I ended up in this state. When I try to update a gem I get the following message:

You don't have write permissions for the /Users/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p448 directory.

I get similar messages when I try to update RVM. I've checked the permissions and the group is RVM with the owner as root. The permissions on the folders are drwsrwrs-s. 

What are the permissions supposed to be? Has anyone else had this problem?
