Is this recommended to use:

or is this sorta like login engine, and it's going to be gone soon.

or is there some 'newer' version out that I'm not aware of? Really
what I'm looking for is to just create users, sessions and manage them
via a REST interface. All the other bells and whistles don't matter.

That link is outdated. Restful authentication can be found at
github. However, all solutions have issues you need to be aware of.
Just make sure you pick a stable version and learn the limitations.
