Guys what are the S/W development firms in Lanka that use Ruby/RoR as a technology in their products/solutions? And are there any exclusively Ruby/RoR shops? Just asking because i am curious ;)

Thanks!

Well, we already know a couple of things.

# Vesses is probably the most known brand.
# Ridgecrest is involved with some popular web apps.

AFAIK, both use and have ongoing RoR/Ruby work other than their
flagship work.

# Providence used to do RoR projects. I'm not aware of the current
state. Started using RoR roughly the same time as Ridgecrest.
Since I worked there for a while, I know that they conducted at least
two Ruby/RoR training programs (by Indian trainers) for their staff.

# JKCS
# CMS/E-Solutions
Have used RoR at least for one-off projects in the past.

I've also seen other companies advertising for Ruby/Rails jobs
in the recent past.

# WSO2 has a SOA product support for Ruby

That's what I can recall right now. It's not exhaustive nor thorough.
Hope it helps.

Thanks!

On the bright side, things seem to develop slowly here in SL for
the Ruby/Rails employment. But could really use some good
evangelism.

The biggest two hurdles for Ruby/Rails adoption as I've noticed
is the lack of awareness/mindshare about Ruby in general and
secondly the tendency to not embracing the Ruby way once
it's in the technology portfolio.

Hope these helped. :)

Hi Yasith,

We at Ridgecrest use ROR for our production web applications, currently we have
http://www.ticketslk.com/ and http://www.sportslk.com/  in production and several other apps in line :D

@gaveen, thanks for the details answer

cheers,
sameera

Gaveen, Sameera, Chanux and Aslam thanks for your replies. Specially gaveen for the very detailed reply :)

What about the freelancers? Don't know how popular it is with them and their customers...

I think embracing the ruby way requires some time and work for devs who are coming from a .net/java..etc background. I know it by experience :P But as you have noted, in order to gain the full benefits of ruby you need to embrace the ruby way.

@sameera
I think Vesses is using a mix of ruby/php...etc. Is it the same situ in Ridgecrest? If so there are no exclusive ruby shops in LK (its not necessarily a bad thing).

Just to clarify, Vesess is not a purely Ruby shop sort of. We believe in using right tool for right job, so we use plethora of technologies from including Ruby/Rails.

Nice discussion, sorry I couldn't jump in, swamped with work ;)
