Hi All,

My colleague Amila Sampath has registered the lkrug.org domain name for us and created a park page :) So big kudos for him on behalf of the community!

I think it would be great if we could start working on the official site as well.

Hi,

Indeed, kudos to Amila. :) And as Lakshan said we should start on the site
also. This too is something to discuss in the next meetup. another reason
why I'm all for a physical meetup opposed to a virtual one (even if it could
be called a meetup).

This is great! :)

I'm not aware of any plans for the site but It would be nice to have a
little intro about LKRUG on (current) site and maybe a link to this
group?

Hi Chanux,

It's good to see you in this list. Hope you could hang around. :)

The current page is supposed to be a place holder until we get a proper site
ready. X'mas, new year and the prez election slowed us a little bit down. So
we couldn't have a site ready as early as we hoped for. We are going to
work things out in this weeks upcoming meetup.

Having a link to this group meanwhile makes sense. Let's see if we can get
it in place. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah..that seems a good idea. Let's ask Amila to put the link.

Done.

BTW. Since I'm not a network guy, We need a responsible person to
admin the site. Any volunteer(s) ? So I can share the credentials.

Amila.

Hi,

I'm not a networking guy, nor a web/webapp developer. But If you need a
system administrator (Linux/Unix), I'd be more than happy to help.

Haha!
I'm more comfortable with C/C++ though. But I really need to get a grip with Ruby and I've been waiting for really a long time. Slower start and community that can help will be a great help for me :) . Prog lang design and concepts module I take this semester will touch a bit of ruby and LISP which I was equally eager to learn.

And I'd like to know if Ruby has anything taken in from LISP.

Happy to be a part of this community :)

Annyong Chanux,

As I see the biggest thing Ruby took from LISP is the concept of bottom-up programming (http://www.paulgraham.com/progbot.html), where you can build the language to suit your problem. This is what also called as Domain Specific Languages (DSLs). Ease of creating DSLs with Ruby was the key for its popularity. Rails, Capistrano, Chef - all these are DSLs which were created to address different problem domains.

I guess though LISP introduced the concept of DSLs, syntax (no parenthesis hell) and flexibility (open classes aka monkey patching & anonymous blocks) of Ruby really made it usable.
