Hi I'm a new member of RubyJax! My name is Louis and I've been
involved in software for about 30 years. I have a computer science
degree, but alas, I have let my programming slip a bit (have done VB /
C / perl / korn shell) but recently decided got an idea for a website
and wanted to see if I could jump into web development and it looks
like RoR is a great way to go.

So is this group still active? I really need some advice on getting
things set up for "hello world" in an environment that will be very
cheap at first, but with a plan to scale if the site takes off after a
year or two.

Welcome Louis!

If you have specific questions fire away here on the list. If your scope is broad I'd be happy to get together with you and talk shop at either the Hashrocket Office or a local coffee shop.

Cheers!

P.S. You should come to the meetup Thursday night (http://rubyjax.com/2009/7/20/rubyjax-refreshjax-july-joint) and get say hello.

Heroku makes for a great platform to deploy new apps. It's free for
entry level and easy to deploy with git.

There are also some great Vim plugins available thanks to Tim Pope to
make it a great Ruby on Rails text editor.

Wish I could make it, but my granddaughter just had a baby and she's
coming home from the hospital. So I'm going to be pretty plus it's
production night here at BCBSFL and I'm on call for that (and expect
to get called). Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the next
meeting!
