Looking for some guidance on SMTP servers...

Right now I'm in need of some guidance. Who here does or has managed an internal SMTP server? Who has experience with hosted solutions?

I don't know a lot about SMTP servers, but I do check that they implement RFC 1149 in case you are operating in a difficult network environment.  If it doesn't support RFC 1149, it's not a serous SMTP server.
