I get that the old design was seriously dated, so in many ways the new design is an improvement, but by god that color!!!

It's worst on the home-page (obviously), but even the menu-bar and font highlight colors are excruciating.

Someone please have mercy!

Being critical without offering any solutions is really not a great move.  Perhaps suggesting (or even mocking up!) a new theme might get you more traction.

This is entirely inconsiderate of the hundreds to thousands of hours that many volunteers have put into the site, its infrastructure, and as of late, it's design since 2009.

You know what's "excruciating" ? Going to bed many nights thinking of the folks I didn't get time to respond to on the help site. Getting Pingdom alerts at strange times of the day, when I'm out with my family or friends, and I can't always respond to them. Learning that the site was hacked via Hacker News while I was commuting via bus. Knowing that good people can't get their work done because our *volunteers* are busy with their lives or other things.

There's so much more that could be done here. The color of the site is the last of our worries.

Someone, please have mercy.

I don't mind it so much, and I'm sure I'll get used to it visually.

But the main things I go to rubygems.org for are the listing of releases
and dates, and looking at dependencies for each one. And there's a lot
more scrolling to get there, I wish those were higher up on the page.

Could just be my own usage patterns though. I wonder if there's any
evidence about what parts of a rubygems.org gem page are most-used? Or
even without 'evidence', just opinions of the rubygems developers
through experience? It might make sense to try to make those things
'above the fold' on common screen sizes.

Let's turn this thread positive!

Thank you Nick and the rest of the community who put in THOUSANDS of hours to support our infrastructure.

Don't listen to the haters.  The work you do is doing solid good for the world.  The world is a better place because of your effort. I think I say this for everyone when I say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sorry, I thought it was 'glaringly' (groan!) obvious what I was suggesting - pick a more subtle color. Or just tone down the current one. No big deal.

Hopefully you don't need me to point out the huge logical fallacy here. I'll leave it at that.

Thank you, Nick, and all the other volunteers who have worked for free on such an important part of our community infrastructure.

For anyone who would like to change the way it looks to you, try the stylish plugin for firefox or chrome -- see https://userstyles.org/.

Matthew: the site is open source. Changing the colour scheme is only a pull request away ;)
