I'm not sure if many of you guys have heard of the concept of Railscamp.

Imagine yourself and a posse of like-minded ruby hackers on a country retreat with zero internet for a weekend of fun. You'll laugh, hack, learn, cry (well, you probably won’t cry… but you know… it felt poetic) and most likely play a crap-load of guitar hero.

Last Railscamp in Melbourne

Ireland really is an ideal location for this.  It would get all developers around the country meeting up and forming some great friendships as well as hacking on some great applications.

Would love to get one going sometime next year in the country and get other European developers to join us.

Any thoughts?

So, firstly we'd need to get an idea of numbers interested.

Can you fill out this quick survey just so we can get going with this.

Done, cheers for looking into this Jonathan! Be great if the australian contingent made it over.

@David,

Yeah, one or two are interested, all depends on the dates though.
Right now we have 6 responses for interest to the event. Unless there
is much more interest it won't be viable to go ahead.

Dates right now are:
Jul/31/2010
Apr/01/2010
Apr/01/2010
Jun/26/2010
May/01/2010
Oct/25/2010

Desired prices seem to vary between 100 - 300 euro

Hey, if this idea hasn't been scrapped yet, I'd be well up for it?

OK, it seems like the consensus is to have this event take place
sometime between May and July.

The price would have to be between from 100-200 euros per person

Arrive Friday evening
BBQ welcome on Friday
3 meals Saturday
3 meals Sunday
Breakfast Monday
Depart Monday morning

Hopefully 100-200 would cover all that in a venue. Right now we have
7 people who entered their interest, due to the dates I've got a few
conflicts going on and won't be able to make it this year so I need a
few people to man up and take responsibility for this event. Any
takers?

Nice work Jonathon.

I'd be glad to help out organising this. Can I ask, example what the focus of a Rails Camp is? Is it a case of R.I. members and the like getting together for a wkend away hackfest or does it have big name speakers, etc.?

Hi Declan,

The big name speakers are of course invited, but the emphasis is on
hackfest. Anyone's invited to give presentations, but generally
they're way more ad hoc than prepared talks.

Lots of hacking / gaming / collaborating / werewolf / drinking.

Might be worth getting in touch with @pat, or @mrjaba for some
planning advice and pointers.

Paul got it perfect, if anything it is an anti-conference, but I think
it's the only ruby conference that could occur in Ireland.

Think of it as a way to meet the people behind the twitter handles,
sit down with like minded people, pair program, think up some cool
interesting stuff and get something back to the community over the
course of the weekend.

Code as little or as much as you want, work alone (better to work with
others in collaboration) and above all, de-stress, kick back and relax
a bit. Learn some new libraries or a brand new framework. I know guys
who went to hack on vim and emacs, others who spend their time working
on nifty Iphone apps, whilst complete newbies to ruby were stepped
through their first Rails / passenger installation by some of the
worlds best ruby developers, while others drank beer and played
cards. It really is as much as you want to put into it. Lots of
people come with the idea of there being a schedule, list of talks and
lots of organisation.

It's a great way to get working on a project you think is cool and
could possibly need help with over the course of the weekend. Just
remember, Werewolf and Mexican is compulsory.

Regarding speakers, last RC in Melbourne, Geoffrey Grosenbach of
Peepcode fame was along for the ride.....there are tonnes of decent
developers out there, we just have to get organized and get the word
out.

I agree that I don't think we could hold a big conf (I have other
plans for that ... see next week!) ... but I'd like to invite a few
people over for little mini ones. I've a few things in mind and I've
asked around. There's a good bit of interest.

Stay tuned!

Hi all,

I'd suggest a combined Ruby & Python event. It would make it easier to
organise and to reach a critical mass of attendees. Have one track for
Ruby, one for Python and a couple of other rooms for hacking and
kicking back.

Python events in Dublin consistently pull in over twenty
people--although the group is quieter online. I know the main
organisers, Vicky and Mick, have ambitions to stage a conference too.

Another option: combine the event with a "startup weekend". (Dublin
has shot up to 223 votes on http://startupweekend.org since I last
looked.)

I'm sorry to say I'm going to miss Tuesday's event: I have some
business in Galway to attend to.

Ciao,

Kevin.
