I've just painstakenly upgraded a legacy Rails 1.2 app to Rails 2.2.
Among the reasons was more or less good support for Sunspot-Rails.
Reading the github page I now see that Rails 2.3 is required, while
this used to be 2.2. Since I've spent way too much time doing the
Rails upgrade, what are the latest gem versions I can use for Rails
2.2?

While the upgrade from 1.2 to 2.2 was probably a nightmare, the
upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 won't be bad. You may consider just upgrading
again.
