Does rushd need to be running on the remote box?

to rush, the Ruby Shell
I have installed Rush on both client and server, however I only seem
to be able to execute commands on the remote box if I manually start
rushd first.
The docs suggest that the client automatically starts rushd after
connecting via SSH.
I have verified rushd is in my PATH on my server.
Is there anything else I need to do?
Mac Client
Ubuntu Server
Rush 0.6.4
Ruby 1.8.6
